Albums »Stop Making Sense

Stop Making Sense Talking Heads My parents have always been huge Talking Heads fans and I grew up listening to this album. It's still one of the best to lift my spirits on my commute to work. Of course, the Jonathan Demme concert film of the same name is also a must.

Movies »Radio Days

Directed by Woody Allen (1987) The best movie to watch during the new year. This is a funny, nostalgic memoir of the New York of Woody Allen's childhood. A world without adopted daughters and possible comebacks (is Match Point really going to be good?), but Mia's still there – and Dianne Wiest. The music is amazing – my song of the week comes from this soundtrack.

If you haven't seen this movie you should.

Albums »Faith

Faith by George Michael Jim and I listened to this the other night and remembered just how totally awesome it is. We both agree that “Father Figure” is the best song. However “Monkey” was Jim's favorite when he was younger, while I still have a soft spot for “One More Try”. “Hand to Mouth”, however, is no one's favorite.

Movies »Withnail and I

Withnail and I To say this is a comedy about two actors who leave the city to go to the country where hilarity ensues would be misleading. Even though this statement is true – this movie is much more than you might expect. Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann are flawless and I laughed out loud during this movie more than any other; but it is also an extremely bittersweet story about an end of an era (the sixties) and the inevitable end of the friendship between two men growing up. Please watch this movie. See a trailer here.

TV Shows »Freaks and Geeks

Freaks and Geeks I lack the talent to truly convey how much I love this show. You are going to have to imagine how much in your heart. You also have to watch it, because your life is not complete until you have.

Movies »Joysticks

Joysticks Joe Don Baker (I don't know if you've ever seen “Mitchell”–if you haven't, rent the MST3K skewering right away) wants to close down a video arcade run by a guy who can't have sex or play video games because of what he saw reflected in the darkened screen of a broken Miss Pac console one terrible night. The theme song “Totally Awesome Video Games” brings a smile to my face every time I hear it, as does another awesome song from the soundtrack, “Vidiots”.

Characters called Dorfus and King Vidiot are involved in a video game contest with the future of the arcade on the line. There's a scene where a hot dog gets stuck between a girl's' tits and no one really does anything for like 2 minutes. “Joysticks” is a little hard to find, it will probably never make it to DVD, but we usually watch it at least once a year.

TV Shows »V – The Original TV Miniseries

V - The Original TV Miniseries Marc Singer (Beastmaster) plays a tough guy news cameraman convinced that “The Visitors”, humanoid aliens that have landed on our planet led by the beautiful Diana, are evil. Singer is totally right, the Visitors are evil, and they quickly enslave the human race by expertly manipulating the very news station Singer once worked as a photog for. This 3 and a half hour mini series began the whole V cycle, continuing with V – The Final Battle and concluding with V – The Series. Throughout the story, poignant parallels are drawn between the alien regime and Fascist movements of the 20th century, sometime there parallels are a little too poignant (I remember Robin ((who I hate)) having to say goodbye to her grandfather or something equally schmaltzy being a perfect time to order take out). All in all, this series is great, and even though there are some evident shortcoming and the production feels a little bit dated (it was a TV show made in 80s, after all), this is an ideal program to commit to on a chilly weekend if you happened to find yourself too hung over to really leave the house.
