Recipes »Eggplant Mozzarella Panini

This Eggplant Panini from The Passionate Eater is a hearty sandwich with marinara sauce and melted cheese. It takes only a few minutes to make – be sure to get the eggplant nice and soft by pan frying first. We used our panini maker, which is an appliance I find far more useful than I ever I expected we would when we got it years ago.

Recipes »Baked Onion Rings

Well, they're not much to look at, and even Mike, who made these baked onion rings as an accompaniment to last weeks excellent home made White Castles will admit it. But throw all appearance-based expectations aside, these things are delicious! And waaay better for you than the deep fried kind.

Here's a recipe from the Food Network site

Recipes »Garlic Lover’s Rub and Sauteed Ramps

garlic lover's rub steak with sauteed rampsAs a true garlic lover, and therefor the perfect audience for a Garlic Lover's Rub, I would have liked to have marinated my flank steak (this rub can be used on anything) for longer, but I was not prepared ahead of time and only have enough time for the minimal marinating (2 hours). Still the meat was flavorful and went perfectly with the wild ramps.

If you haven't heard all the food lovers going ape for ramps, then you haven't been reading food blogs nor hanging out at farmer's markets lately, have you? Because these pungent little wild onions are all the rage and with the simple preparation (literally salt, pepper, butter, ramps) from Martha, the coveting greens got to shine on their own.

Recipes »Brussel Sprout Chips

brussel sprout chipsTurning a brussel sprout into a “chip”,?a snack that even my veggie fearing husband devoured in seconds is brilliant. I first got wind of this recipe on the great food blog Serious Eats who in turn found it on Real Food for Real People (which looks like it could be a great spot for more yummy recipes, honey buttered popcorn, anyone?). I loved these so much I made them twice in one week.

Recipes »Vegan Cheesecake

vegan cheesecake homemadeThe office girls and I were huddled around the homemade vegan cheesecake at a recent office birthday party half full of curioustity, half with trepidation. To all our surprise, especially Grace, who made the healthy confection, there was no need to be weary. It had a nice texture and a sugary taste that could fool even the most skeptical milk and cheese lover.

Restaurants »Foodswings

foodswings brooklyn fake philly cheeseteakI had it on good authority from two reliable friends that Souen was the place to try macrobiotic hippy food that is actually yummy, but it was just too steep a learning curve for someone who gets crushes on their local butcher and is dreaming of ways to make cow hearts and bone marrow. Everything had that earthy, kind of dirty after-taste and it cost a fortune; but people love it, so I don't want to knock it too much.

I found Foodswings, a vegan spot in Williamsburg with a “fast food” bent to be a much easier sell. I'd recommend getting a couple things to share, since the flavors can be monotonous, but overall we were surprised by how much we enjoyed it. The menu is huge and overwhelming, and my only advice is to steer clear of the mac and cheese (mac and cheese sans butter and cheese is just a sad thing no matter how hard you try), otherwise, it seems like you can't go too wrong here.

I had the fake beef Philly cheese-steak which had nice, almost teriyaki-ish flavor and Jim was pretty impressed with the fake chicken drumsticks that came with a dill ranch that I personally loved. Desserts are tasty too. We split a pistachio shake (forgetting while ordering that I was putting my life in my hands) that, despite salmonella paranoia, was absolutely delicious.

This is a spot I'd take a veggie friend coming for a visit, and who knows, with their uncharacteristically helpful service and chicken wings that even Sam Champion loves, I might be back on my own too.

Drinks »Whiskey with a Pickle Juice Shot

pickle juice and jamesonThere was a time when I got really upset at Jim for throwing away my pickle juice. I like to sip it when the mood strikes me from time to time and Jim learned the hard way that I hate little indulgences being taken away from me.

I never imagined my weird obsession would be paired with my less weird obsession, Jameson but that's exactly what I found at Savalas the other night. Just ask for the pickle house special and an enthusiastic bartender will try to convince you that it really is good (I put my hand up to stop him, convincing over this combo was something I did not need) and more likely than not he'll join you in downing the shots.

Other spots you can find the drink, known as a Pickle Back according to this article are Bushwick Country Club and Whiskey Town. Fortunately, this is also a really easy drink to partake in for less dough at home.
