Web Sites »Cosmic Dust

cosmic dustMagical Image Gallery

I can spend absurd amounts of time in the visual world collected on Cosmic Dust. Although I sometimes wish there was a bit more info about the images and where/how they were gathered, it’s a small qualm for such an engaging site. The definite point of view is one of magic, myth, hippiedom, and nomadic wonder. I’ve gathered just a few of my favorite images from the past few weeks here, but be sure to go to the site and rummage through the archives and see the daily new posts.

Web Sites »The Catalyst

While Googling 'cat fashion' (because how else would I unwind while half-watching Glee and eating cereal late at night?) I found the wonderful little blog Catalyst, and in it a kindred spirit who not only loves cats and fashion, but geodesic domes!!?/p>

I'm bummed that author Jenny didn't stick it out longer than a year or so, but the near year of imagery is a fun and inspirational way to pass the time, even if it is finite.

Laughs »United Bamboo Calendar

Cats and fashion! You know I'm there. So sad then that the United Bamboo calendar?is already out of stock.

Maybe Tiptoe and I-Hop will be up for a homemade version…

Web Sites »Reference Library

Reference Library is a great visual collection of interesting items with an American hand-made bent that on any given day makes you want to throw on a pair of Lees, go climb a tree, sew something, or dig through an attic.

Web Sites »Luxirare

Luxirare is such a stunning elevated perfectionism, that scrolling through her large, luscious images of wild fashion and even wilder home made foods is somewhat mind boggling. How can this woman, who creates such fascinating things with an incredible knack for aesthetic detail, who only appears with a blurred out face, possibly be human?

I am envious beyond belief of fellow style bloggist, Style Bubble receiving the truly rare gift of one of Luxirare's garments: a pierced breast embroidered motorcycle jacket PLUS a perfectly packaged jar of her own truffle honey. Ouch, the thought of that on hot biscuits is painfully dreamy.

Web Sites »Kal Rieman

When you were say a Freshman, was there ever an older girl that just simply fascinated you with her effortless cool? That's how I felt about Cally when I first started working next to her in my office. Over the years, we've gotten to know each other and I count her as a friend, but I'm no less fascinated by her. Especially now that she's up and left us (boo) to pursue what's sure to be an amazing career (yay) as the designer of her own line, Kal Rieman.

Web Sites »Lady Starlight’s Rock and Roll High School

lady starlight's rock and roll high schoolLady Starlight seems to be some kind of clubbing superstar of NYC nightlife. But I wouldn't know anything about that because I'm the one home writing blogs like this and snuggling my cats at one in the morning as opposed to say, this. She was also Lady Gaga's original collaborator – also something I know little about but I have an inkling our Miss Starlight inspired all those wacky lovably out of control costumes because she knows the meaning of fun and spandex.

The girl's got great taste and will inspire you with images of metal and glam's most spectacular fashions on her blog Lady Starlight's Rock and Roll High School. All the well known greats are here, like Iron Maiden and Roxy Music, but like any good site, it might introduce you to new names?- Sweeney Todd or Alvin Stardust perhaps?

Web Sites »BryanBoy

bryan boyThis style insider has a passion for fashion that has won him the hearts of fashion fans and legends. Marc Jacobs has even named a purse after Bryan Boy. His entries, including his videos “Faggotry in Motion” are swishy and charming. From praising Barbara (“I love her!”) to describing his afternoon (just a photo of a martini and shopping bags), you'll get your fix of tiny Filipino fab daily.

I also love that he takes his portraits for interviews draped over a camels back, dripping in unusual fur.

Books »American Denim – A New Folk Art

american denim a new folk art Why do I mention it now?

Because I have some stunning images from the book to share with you here.

Here's what I said back on 8/6/07:

This coffee table book about the art of denim embellishment caught my eye for purely professional reasons. But, despite the lack of substantial text, it has become a beloved personal treasure. The minimal text (by Beagle) is really of its time and refreshingly hippy dippy.

Of embellishing our clothes he proposes that if we all had become bellbottomed people with rockets embroidered on our pockets, Adam and Eve appliqued on our legs, and rainbows sequined up our thighs interplanetary relations would benefit: “UFOs, hesitant to land on this planet of legendary menace, would know that we meant them no harm.”

You know, I agree with him too. His insights, though few, are interesting in comparison to today, when a craft movement is again in full swing. He says of the people who are part of the movement then, “what these people seem to have in common is not an official counterculture – that hardly exists anymore… but it is the desire for some little control over one's own life”.

The book is great, there's lost of bright, fun photographs of extreme embroidery, macrame, feathers, fringe, lace, sequins… you name it. I've been told that this is a highly sought after book in the apparel world, so if you find it at a used book shop like my mom did, grab it!
