A Magazine for Groupies

Oh yes!!

If you remember, eons ago I discovered a little gem called Star Magazine – a publication devoted entirely to the art of being a groupie. The site I marked then is now all gone, but in it’s place has emerged Star1973, an amazing site where you can find all five editions scanned front to back (!!)

I am dying with excitement.

Ryan Richardson gets major props for sharing this with the world (and for all that scanning – if I only had half the time and patience for my own vintage mag collection…).

I can’t wait to really spend some time with this one – I mean, come on, just look at the article below. The Girl Who Fights Over Guys – Will You Be Ready To Face Her?.

It just so deliciously brazen and upfront about it’s goal – to help you, the young groupie, bed rock stars (even if you have to bust some heads to get into Alice Cooper’s bed).

And the fashions! Girls and boys alike would be dropping over dead in the streets if these ladies were to strut down Bedford Avenue today.

at the Met thru July 31

The Alexander McQueen exhibit, Savage Beauty at the Met is extraordinary as McQueen was the most extraordinary of designers. To see his fantastic creations in person is awe inspiring and the Met has done an unusually wonderful job of displaying them dramatically and respectfully.

Of course, like any fashion show at the museum it can test ones patience with all the crowds (at one point it was literally shoulder to shoulder) but if ever a show were worth the inconvenience this is it.

The exhibit spans the whole of his career and leaves one not only breathtaken at the details and imagination but heart broken as well. I was more moved after walking through than I expected and found myself with a knot in my stomach and a bit teary eyed by the end to know such an amazing talent is gone.

I couldn’t help but act like I still had pre-baby disposable income and splurged on the gorgeous, hologram covered book (Happy Mother’s Day to me!) but wisely, the museum has offered more affordable souvenirs including a very nice calendar and a pretty humorous armadillo high heel paper weight.

This is a must see!

Leave Your Dress As A Comment

It’s a silly tradition I can never get rid of. Every year I choose a dress that I would wear to the Oscars. This time it’s an exquisitely lovely lilac gown from the Givenchy Couture Collection.

The Julien Macdonald dress is for all the after parties.

The Best in Men’s Style

I really couldn’t love a blog more than I do Street Etiquette. Bloggers Joshua Kissi and Travis Gumbs, who are a mere 20 years old (!) and totally hunky, organize their thoughtful, stylish entries buy article of clothing such as berets, corduroy, jean jackets, chambray, and my own personal current love, jungle boots.

They present suggested ways to wear each item and bits of history, shopping guides and inspiration. Their photography is gorgeous, they have distinct character that lots of style blogs lack, and I like me some clothing and accessories close ups like nothing else.

This is a great example of engrossing and thorough blogging that is near perfect in it’s execution and usability. I’ve been raving about it to anyone that will listen since discovering it a couple days ago.

While I’ve always said I’d never like working in menswear, because it would be sooo boooring, I have to admit, thanks to stellar dapper gents like these, I am becoming more and more intrigued with the details of slacks, ties and buttons downs.

Part the reason for my new passion is that I now have a son who I get to dress for at least the next five odd years (if Jim refuses to roll up his pants and nix the socks, fine but Van can’t if he can’t talk!) and part of the reason is that since I no longer get to get dressed up for work, I am starting to live vicariously through Jim.

I’ve even asked if I can pick outfits for him and am bugging him to add neckties to the daily rotation. Street Etiquette is sure to inspire some looks I will be coaxing him to try.

Fashion Illustrator

If you’re a fashion lover, the sketches of David Downton are likely familiar even if you don’t know the name. One of the most inspiring and visible fashion illustrators working today, Downton is going to become more well known with his new lovely looking book, Masters of Fashion Illustration (which features many other illustrators as well).

A hard working freelance graphic artist for years, who according to his biography was “wagging (his) tail when the phone rang”, he eventually found a niche in the fashion world that has resulted in some of the most beautiful modern portraits of the world’s most beautiful women.
