Spend a Couple Minutes »Japan Premium Beef

japan premium waygu beefNews of the wagyu butcher Japan Premium Beef coming to NoHo brought smiles to all the city’s meat loving home-chefs. Thrilled to see the offerings myself, I headed over after work intent on bringing home something special. The space itself is absolutely pristine and the very helpful staff even wears perfectly tailored suits as they walk you through the meat freezers.

I kind of expected to walk out with a much lighter wallet – and believe me, if I’d chosen a tenderloin, I would have – but shockingly, a pound of their juicy marbled ground cost me only five dollars. The butcher recommended I cook the beef with nothing more than salt, pepper, and (his own personal special recipe) a pinch of nutmeg. The resulting burger was fantastic and I will be returning to try other cuts.

Web Sites »E Movie Poster

emovieposter astonding she monsterE Movie Poster is about to take away a lot of your time, and possibly money, but you won't mind. There are just so many amazing images to look through: posters in all shapes and sizes, from every decade and genre.

You can search for exactly what you're looking for and bid away on something fun for your walls, or you can just browse through the images and maybe be inspired to add some forgotten possible gems to your Netflix queue.

Just in the past few moments, I've uncovered “the most savage film in history” and it stars Murphy Brown. I've also had my interest piqued by a Joan Collins vehicle called Tales That Witness Madness! (which is not available on DVD) and what about Deadly Blessing, anyone remember this poster for a Wes Craven thriller that rips on his own classic Nightmare on Elm Street poster (and, from what I've read, stars Ernest Borgnine as an Amish ringleader).

Spend a Couple Minutes »Schaller and Weber

schaller weber hot dogsIt's rare to absolutely adore a meat shopping experience, but Schaller and Weber, a classic German market that has stood on 2nd Avenue since 1937, is such a friendly old world kind of place with such kindly service that you leave with a warm feeling in your heart and a smile on your face.

Along with that warm feeling, I took home some extra spicy mustard, great bottled chornicons, a marzipan piglet, and a phenomenal few bright red hot dogs. Later snuggled in French bread along with that spicy mustard, these were some of the best dogs we've ever enjoyed.

What we didn't leave with was one of the cute classic steins in the windows. Another visit will be necessary for me to pick one up, and i'll probably take a couple more of those hot dogs too.

Spend a Couple Minutes »Shopping at Exquisite Costume

Exquisite Costume - 377 Broome StWhy do I mention it now?

Because Stacy has been thriving and delivering truly “exquisite” vintage for a few years now, and you STILL need to visit the shop if you haven't already.

Here's what I said back on 2/20/06

My dear friend Stacy has just opened a vintage clothing store in Soho and it is BEAUTIFUL. No eighty dollar western shirts here, dear. Unlike many vintage stores, the shelves aren't lined with junk, only truly “exquisite” garments from the 1800's to today. Stop in and take a look.

Spend a Couple Minutes »FAO Schwartz

muppet wall at fao schwartzI have not walked the bright and cheery halls of FAO Schwartz in years, probably since I was a kid, but it still holds magic for me as an adult. There are actors a plenty speaking from the diaphragm to entice you inside, men and women in costume that bring to mind images of Santaland Diaries, especially when they crack and you see a little bit of madness in their eyes. Right inside there are huge Lego creations of your favorite fictional heroes, toy helicopters floating overhead, and perched above are giant stuffed animal dragons and unicorns (now on sale, mom!).

Retro is the word throughout the store, not only with an adorable version of Mikey Mouse that looks like a modern interpretation of?the old black and white cartoons but with a history of candies display that is just a mouth full of cavities waiting to happen. Plus, it is Barbie's birthday! And in honor of her, special edition Barbies throughout the ages are being sold (I kind of want the 1962 bubble hair one AND the Barbie and the Rockers one).

You can also find Josephine Baker Barbie, Alvin Ailey Barbie, Speed Racer Barbie, and even a pair of Juicy Couture Barbies. Most exciting, though, particularly for the tons of little girls we saw celebrating a pink birthday party, is a computer station that lets you customize your own doll, then buy it. A runway of Barbies of your creation strut down an electronic runway to boot.

That kind of customization is also a very exciting part of the store – and the most fun example is the Muppet making station, where you can create your own little friend. I am seeing a very awesome birthday present for a few people I know in the future?br/>
See some of my photos here.

Spend a Couple Minutes »Giant Robot Gallery

giant robot gallery nycA sliver of a gallery and shop, Giant Robot NY is currently hosting Printed Matter Five, a collection of one offs and prints from over thirty young artists. Priced from $15 up, you are in luck if your searching for something bright and hip for your walls. The show ends July 3rd, though, and prints are limited, so hurry on over in case your favorite sells out like mine did.

Still, the staff is extreemely friendly and helpful and will even put a request in for artists to deliver more prints if possible if there's something you really want. I may be back this week to grab a frowning hamburger by Justine Fines and this lovely piece by Chris Bettig. If you're not in the area, you can also purchase remaining pieces from their website.

Spend a Couple Hours »Odds Costume Rental Sale

odds costume rental saleThere are days in my little life that go down forever in my personal shopping history (remember the $5 sale at that weird Off Fifth in Worcester, Stacy?) and Tuesday was definitely one of them. Odds Costume Rental is closing its doors, a sure tragedy in many respects, but the warehouse wide sale that accompanies the bad news is one of the most mind blowing and heart stopping experiences for fans of costume and vintage. I am indebted to Diane for the tip and am thrilled to pass it on to you.

From 1930's evening gowns, to layered embroidery gypsy skirts, from police uniforms to Carmen Miranda hats, the place will make your head spin with the possibilities. There are even racks and racks of men's stuff, though I didn't peruse them with any detail.

The prices are not dirt cheap, but extraordinarily reasonable for the exceptional quality and uniqueness of the garments. The only downside of the experience is that “insiders”, mostly performers and friends, seem to get slightly better deals than people like me that just wear this stuff on the stage of life. It was a little heart breaking to see one of the in crowd get lots more than me for the same price, but hey – $85 for a fully beaded flapper dress, $30 for the cutest, weirdest 80's poof dress this side of Betsy Johnson?I really can't complain can I?

There is a dressing room, in which you must be prepared to bare it all with a gaggle of other shoppers and it's only right that you put back the pieces you decide not to buy – I can't imagine the head ache abandoned dresses give the boisterous ladies who run it. Plus, they'll yell at you if you make their day more difficult.

The sale goes on until July 1st, and if I had infinite cash and time (and arm muscles – hauling this stuff still has me shakey) I could go back every day until then. But, fortunately, I do have some self control, and I'll just send everyone I know there every day instead.

Phew, I'm still buzzing from the thrill.

Spend a Couple Minutes »Alter 109

pointer sneakers from alterI made my way through the doors of the appealing men's shop Alter for the first time last weekend in search of a fashionable gift for a fashionable man we know. From the store's pristine and hip appearance I was half expecting to walk away empty handed due to over priced items, but happily I found the shop stacked high with affordable clothes and accessories, as well as a few more upscale (but still reasonably priced) special pieces.

With added savings from constant sales, we got a great wool hat, suspenders and a tie for our friend at a price that most boutiques would offer only one of those items. Jim even opted for an all black pair of Pointer sneakers for himself.

The staff is personable and helpful and with such a pleasant experience, I am thinking I might just indulge in a shopping trip for myself to the women's shop across the street. If you're not in the neighborhood and are curious of what might be in store before you make the G train journey, check out their blog for updates.

Drinks »Brouwerij Lane

Brouwerij Lane GrowlerThe opening of Brouwerij Lane, the new high end beer store in Greenpoint, was met with much excitement; friends who dropped in to the grand opening said you could hardly move through the crowds clamoring for free beer and expensive imports.

We waited till a later date to see what the store, a former chop shop, had to offer. In what has quickly become a daily tradition, a beer tasting was underway and beer snob clients and staffers alike were a touch on the drunk side (it took too many tries for our selection to be wrung up at the register, with wildly different sums each time). The staff's not quite as friendly and helpful as my newest local obsession, Marlow and Daughters, but that's okay.

The selection is fun to browse and you can mix up six packs with anything you want. Prices on bottled beer are a tad high (many can be found cheaper in Manhattan Avenue bodegas), but Brouweij Lane does offer a number of bottles not readily available elsewhere in the area. Stick to trying stuff you haven't seen anywhere else and you'll feel less foolish the next time you walk into Nature's Garden and spot a bottle of Delirium for less.

But the real draw, and the thing that makes the beer snobbery and high prices disappear is the Whole Foodsesque growler system. For a $5 deposit you can get yourself a growler; for $10 more you ca fill it with anything they have on tap. We tried a great beer called Gruut Belgian Amber, which the tap master informed us would be a staple in the lineup; the other taps change frequently, which is exciting if you love trying new things. You get about four or five glasses of beer from the jug and you can fill it up again and again and again.

I loved doing this at Whole Foods but it was never convenient to bring my growler back for a refill. But now, with Brouwerij Lane in the neighborhood, I can take advantage of this ingenious system much, much more often.
