Books »Catwalk Cats

by Grace Coddington and Didier Malige (2006)

Fashion and cats! That’s a sure-fire combo for a perfect birthday present and my very kind co-workers knew it when they got me Grace Coddington and Didier Malige‘s totally charming The Catwalk Cats.

Consisting of quirky line drawings by Coddington and stunning photographs by Malige of their pets Henri, Coco, Baby, Puff and Bart, the book is a delight. The drawings of the cats in designer clothing are incredible.

Web Sites »The Catalyst

While Googling 'cat fashion' (because how else would I unwind while half-watching Glee and eating cereal late at night?) I found the wonderful little blog Catalyst, and in it a kindred spirit who not only loves cats and fashion, but geodesic domes!!?/p>

I'm bummed that author Jenny didn't stick it out longer than a year or so, but the near year of imagery is a fun and inspirational way to pass the time, even if it is finite.

Spend a Couple Minutes »Unleash Brooklyn

Unleash Brooklyn is such a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Not only is there now a near by pet store with truly helpful employees, but the food is healthier and not made with any questionable animal parts or practices. I Hop and Tiptoe (my adorable kitties) are particularly huge fans of the Evo brand Duck.

Even more impressive than the retail store are the facilities for boarding dogs and cats. The dogs get individual beds and a devoted caretaker that even sleeps nights in the same room. Kitties get impressive individual condos as well as a larger area for play.

Everyone that works here is devoted to animals and the stores philosphy:

“Quite simply, we built Unleash Brooklyn for our dogs and cats. We wanted a local place where our pets would receive top-notch care during the day or for an extended period of time.

Unleash Brooklyn is “Green” We built Unleash Brooklyn using recycled, shock-absorbing rubber mats and repurposed lumber. Our cleaning products are green and we implement earth-friendly materials whenever possible.

The concept behind our holistic loft is to bring some of the best professionals in pet care under one roof to redefine the standard of daycare and overnight boarding for dogs and cats.”

Drinks »Beer Island

You may want to go the way we did and get bleary eyed over several beers at Nathans before daring to enter Beer Island at Coney. Even with the veil of Budweiser, the cigarette butt strewn, vomit stained, port-o-potty lined box of sand is glaring to the eye and seems like a dangerous place to spend our time. But spend our time we did.

After all, there was entertainment – if you count burly cretins walking around with unsafe pythons (with their faces taped shut with scotch tape because they bite) and parrots that the pythons are trying to eat. Tons of seedy fun.

Places to Visit »Manisses Animal Farm

Manisses Animal FarmThere are lots of things you might expect to see while strolling around Block Island: weather beaten wooden beach houses, fields of grass, even an Indian burial ground seems somewhat appropriate?but I truly thought that the three and a half hour walk I'd just taken was making me see things when I caught a glimpse of a huge camel nestled in-between vacation homes.

The Manisses Hotel, one of the best elegant dining options on the island, is also home to an impressive wild animal farm. While some might consider it family only fun for the kids, I spent a long time watching the emus, camel, zorse, geese and goslings, ducks, lemurs, donkeys, llamas, lambs (one provided lots of entertainment when a tree branch stuck to his butt made him freak out), and my most favorite and fascinating, a giant, majestic yak.

The site will make you wonder who was behind it and why, but no worries, there's a plaque to explain:

“As a hobby, I have assembled an unusual collection of animals from many parts of the world. You will notice most of the animals live in complete harmony with each other (this is true). The farm also provides education and enjoyment to all visitors?Justin Abrams”

Laughs »Cat Fancy Survey

Cat Fancy Survey I love that Cat Fancy never pretends to be something that it's not. Usually the best parts are the ads for crazy cat lady junk (frequently studded with rhinestones) and the “editorials” by Garfield, which are priceless (this month he weighs in on feline films, pointing out that compared to dogs, cats get the short end of the stick when it comes pet-centric cinema) – but this latest survey had me laughing out loud.

News flash! 76% of cat owners love EVERYTHING about their cats. I'd love to meet (and now that I think of it, I probably already have, at various cat shows) the women and few men who participated in this informal poll and have a talking to with those that didn't vote “everything”.
