Hunks »David Rappaport

Wizard and Time Bandit

David Warner wasn’t the only hunk to emerge from my recent review of Time Bandits. I distinctly remember developing quite the crush on David Rappaport, leader of the rogue time travelers. While this was most likely his most famous role, he also starred in a series called The Wizard, that after looking up on the very in-depth fan site, does tickle some long past memories for me.

I’m also fairly certain (though could find nothing to corroborate) that he starred in an unaired pilot based on the Mongo detective novels by George C. Chesbro.

I was absolutely distraught and dismayed to learn that he killed himself a while back after a long battle with depression.

Hunks »David Warner

Elegant and Sinister Character Actor

Just like this week’s dessert (Peeps), I’m righting a wrong by adding David Warner to my list of hunks. He’s such an obvious love of mine that I simply took it for granted that I had mentioned him here before. The veteran actor, often sinisterly cast, boasts a great career of character roles including Jack the Ripper (Time After Time), Evil (Time Bandits), and Master Control Program in Tron.

Hunks »Titus Welliver

Steely Eyed Heavy

I adored Titus Welliver as Silas on Deadwood, and was thrilled when he showed up as the man in black on Lost (whose casting team seems intent on featuring nearly all of Deadwood’s key actors – will the final episode star Ian McShane? That would be awesome). Last week’s episode dedicated to the telling of Richard’s story allowed more screen time for the now silvery haired and dreamily steely gazed hunk.

I hope more appearances on Lost are to follow, because as much as I love the guy I’m simply not willing to tune into The Good Wife.

Style Icons: Male »Roland Topor

Artist and Renaissance Man of the Surreal

There’s so much awesomeness to admire in the career of Roland Topor that it’s hard to know where to begin. As a visual artist he’s created surreal and creepy magic. As an actor he was Renfield in Herzog’s Nosferatu and had a cameo in my favorite Yugoslavian filmmaker, Dusan Makavejev’s Sweet Movie. As a writer his novel The Tenant was adapted into the fantastic Roman Polanski adaptation and as an designer he (along with Rene Leloux )created one of the most visually stunning animated films of all time, Fantastic Planet. I’m in awe.

Hunks »Nick Offerman

Manly Sitcom Star

Sometimes I feel like the lone defender of Parks and Recreation, the good hearted comedy (in a genuine way – not the schmaltzy, after school special style of the increasingly annoying Community way) that gets better with each viewing. One of the highlights of watching every week is the surprisingly hunky libertarian moustached manly man, Ron Swanson played with dimple smirked charm by Nick Offerman.

Also known as Mr Mullally, the two were photographed in the buff recently for New York Magazine. It made my day. With a career of improv behind him, his more public roles have been few and sometimes questionable (see plumber role on King of Queens) but, to his credit, he’s still surprisingly boyishly and devilishly good looking without the mustache – which is not always the case with facial haired men.

Hunks »Jeff Bridges

The Dude Wins

Who in their right mind couldn’t be happy for the Oscar being presented to Jeff Bridges, one of Hollywood’s most affable and charming good guys. From his first on-screen role as the small town teen in the wonderful Last Picture Show, to the form fitting video arcade gear in Tron (the sequel to which he will star in soon), from his alien ways in Starman to his dazzling redemption in Fisher King, there’s plenty in his career to make us love him.

After all, and perhaps most importantly, this is the Dude we’re talking about here. A certifiable popular culture icon who abides and always knows when new shit has come to light; without that performance by Bridges, the world just wouldn’t be the same.

Hunks »Paterson Joseph

The Marquis

Unless you indulge in as much BBC programming as I do, the lovely face of Paterson Joseph may not be entirely familiar to you – but let me tell you, he’s about as ubiquitous across the pond as this guy is stateside. Trial and Retribution, Peep Show, Dr Who, Murphy’s Law, Waking the Dead, and now even the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency!

Jim and I always refer to him as the Marquis, after his role in Neverwhere, which introduced us to the debonair thespian.

Style Icons: Female »Zelda Rubinstein

Don’t Go Into the Light

Zelda Rubinstein became a part of many of our childhoods thanks to her memorable role as a ghost hunting medium in Poltergeist and now, at the age of 76, she has herself finally gone into the light. Aside from that pivotal role, Rubinstein was a fearless activist against HIV and Aids and spoke out about the dangers before it became fashionable. Rest in peace, Zelda.

Hunks »Dennis Hopper

Wild Man

Fearless, crazy, talented, and bold, Dennis Hopper was the face of a new kind of masculinity – wild and free and unconventional and it’s so sad to hear that he’s losing his battle with cancer. Sure, he became the face of retirement savings and the new Republican Party, but before the white hair and suits he was the drug-eyed original Easy Rider, the nitrous oxide madman who made our skin crawl in Blue Velvet.

Below/after the jump are some favorite Hopper moments and looks. Here’s to you Dennis, who will surely achieve his goal:

“Like all artists I want to cheat death a little and contribute something to the next generation.”

Style Icons: Female »Carrie Fisher

carrieSpace Princess

The on-screen work of the great Carrie Fisher inspired past Halloween costumes of both myself and my sister (see below/after the jump) but it’s the woman herself that I love the most. Her wit, nuttiness, frankness, and wild charm were all clear and on display during her one woman show, Wishful Drinking, that we saw this weekend. She’s spectacular in her flaws.
