Desserts »Pączki

Pączki Polish DonutsOf all the Polish treats that line the streets of my neighborhood, none are so visually appealing as the Paczki, the huge round traditional donuts. We tried a a few this week: chocolate and coconut covered with Bavarian cream, or as the baker called it “good cream” centers and glazed and sugar coated with raspberry.

The cake is extremely dense and very filling, and like any donut, should be consumed right away.

Traditionally, these are made to be eaten on Fat Tuesday before Lent. In many cities it's even called Paczki Day, where paczki eating contests are held.

Places to Visit »Portrait Gallery

portrait gallery brittany hague george washingtonI happen to love both portraiture and our forefathers, so the Portrait Gallery inside the second bank of America in Philadelphia in Independence National Historical Park was a neat stop for me. Seeing portraits of the likes of Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and the handsome Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton make them seem more like real people rather than myths of history books.

And when you think about it, they were pretty remarkable: daring, inventive, devoted, and courageous – they were men who would probably rise up in revolt over the past fews years to see what some politicians have done to their country.

The gallery is expansive and includes portraits of not only the well known greats, but hundreds of men and women that shaped this country as well as a pretty sweet bald eagle.

Admission is free, so there's no cause to skip this next time you're in the area. See my photos?here.

Web Sites »New York Magazine

NYMag is a site I literally visit everyday, and because it's become such an accepted part of my routine, I've forgotten to recommend it. Most New Yorkers I know already subscribe to the printed magazine, but I am even more impressed with their online version. It is, in my opinion, one of the most easy to navigate and interesting that I've come across in all my browsing.

When I first started this blog, I did kind of dream of someone at their site taking notice and offering me a weekly online column. That's never happened, but I am completely content to enjoy their site for all my restaurant, fashion, event, and local news information.

In a time when the old are damning the internet for ruining the written word, I think NYMag has managed to make the leap into technology and take advantage of the great things the internet can offer. Many other sites (particualrly local news) could take some pointers on the clean pop-up window free layout and the ease of finding information here. It's updated frequently with their blog columns but retains the longer magazine pieces and features, which are always quite interesting.

Content wise, it lies between the intelligent but (for my life) far too time and energy consuming New Yorker and the inane Time Out (read about our freelancers going on a boring date!). It's a nice balance.

And hey, maybe one day, they'll have a Brix Picks column after all.

Places to Visit »Lukes Record Exchange and Creepy Cemetaries

luke's record exchangeAnyone who knows me will recognize my Frank Frazetta, AC/DC back patch. For the past nine years, it's my most worn and valued possession and I got it at Luke's Record Exchange in Pawtucket. The ram-shackled store was filled with original goodies like pins, patches, tees, and of course records and for years I have been meaning to make my way back there.

When I heard from my friend Luke (not related to the store) that it had closed, I thought I had missed my chance and the chance to tell you all about it. But, old Luke and his musty store have been standing for 29 years, and after a brief try at becoming an online business only, he missed the shop and for the past five weeks has been moving all the stuff back in. That's the good news.

The bad news is that that old adage is true “you can never go home again”, too much changes and while some changes I can live with, like Luke cutting off his long hair, which he told us was done for his daughter's wedding the other change was heart sickening. He had sold all his vintage back patches on ebay! Oh sadness. Visions of walking out with a Judas Priest or Accept patch faded.

But at least the store was still standing, and while the place is a bit chaotic while they resettle, we did, after lots of digging, manage to find the heavy metal shelf and walked out with some exquisite album art, a heaping hand full of buttons including this beautiful Megadeath one, and a Motley Crue bandanna that I hope Jim will take to wearing at dinner time like he did a red bandanna as a kid “David Foster Wallace style”?because his dad couldn't stand his hair in his eyes.

I also got a couple Kris Kristofferson records for less than 2 dollars each and Coal Miner's Daughter. I think this place is still a gold mine for record collectors, and it seemed like he had quite a collection particularly of old blues stuff. Luke's working on building back up his collections and will take advice, questions, requests, or ideas from you, just contact him at his website.

Now, as for that other great oldie, the vintage denim warehouse that we used to go to in Pawtucket – I had no luck on my last visit finding it but I am determined to go there again if it still exists and, of course, I will keep you updated and informed.

Recipes »Szechuan Green Beans with Ground Pork

schezwan pork green beansI have always wanted to find a Chinese recipe that is easy to make at home to substitute the often stomach pain inducing greasiness and heaviness of delivery or restaurant food. Of course, to be fair, not all Chinese restaurants are terrible, but I find the better quality ones are usually pricier and they're nowhere near where I live.

So I find myself sometimes in a pickle. I'll crave Chinese food, but know full well that if I act upon that craving it will end in misery. But, now with this Szechuan Green Beans with Ground Pork recipe, I can just make it myself. While I can't claim it's authentic, it is delicious – one of the best meals hands down I've made in a while. It's full of flavor, though not as spicy as you might expect for it being “szechuan” and less than 300 calories per serving.

I rarely make the same thing twice around here, but this is going to become a simple, quick, excellent regular in our house.

Laughs »Zach Galifianakis

zach galifianakis live at the purple onionI recommended the Seth Galifianakis clips from youtube awhile ago but had yet to see the entire Live From the Purple Onion special that it was pulled from. As a fan, it's almost an inforgivable offense. Fortunately, it's available for instant viewing on Netflix (who sponsered it) so, finally, we sat down to it tonight.

If an hour of jokes about, among many things: Natalie Merchant lazer shows, Noam Chomsky eating pussy, and Mort Sahl appeals to you, you are probably already a fan of this charming, unhinged and wonderfully bearded comedian. You've seen him in the infamous Absolut Vodka ads, singing with Fiona Apple, and robbing gravy. Here you can also watch as he chastises the audience, throws around amazing flirty faces, and dives into self deprecation about his celebrity and beer gut status.

Aside from his turn as Seth, a few quirky short films of him hanging out on a road trip dot the dvd, but it's his stand up that will have you laughing most.?I was particularly struck by his character “a five year old complaining about his beard.”

TV Shows »Poirot

PoirotIt is a travesty, an embarrassment, and absolute craziness that I have not recommended the exceptional series, Agatha Christie's Poirot in these pages before. I even double and triple checked to see if I had recommended it at one point and just forgot. Well, I am rectifying the glaring omission now as a huge and loyal fan of the exquisitely art directed and acted mystery.

David Suchet much like Jeremy Brett before him portraying Sherlock Holmes, positively embodies and becomes Agatha Christie's famously fussy Hercules Poirot. The Belgium detective, living in the most stunning art deco flat in London circa 1936. A former famed policeman, the stout and dignified man is now a free agent, solving mysteries often with the help of the charming but slightly bumbling Chief Inspector Japp, Captain Hastings, and the sweet Miss Lemon.

With over twelve series spanning nearly twenty years, there is much to discover for anyone who has not seen this acclaimed show yet. I am doubtful I've even seen them all, especially the more recent, and from what I've read, darker episodes.

The mysteries are intriguing and cozy, the acting is great, but the real magic of the show is the art direction and costuming. If I could make the world of Poirot my own, I would. Every interior, exterior, pillow, garden, hat, sleeve, bed frame, and hairdo is perfection. Please take a look at some more stills from the show and enter into my dream existence.

Spend a Couple Minutes »Seal Up Your Windows

frost king window sealSaving money, conserving energy and staying warm are all good resolutions as the biting winds of Winter are approaching. We've been meaning to seal up our leaking windows for a while now and finally, at the high recommendations of friends, used Frost King window insulation.

It's a pretty easy install, particularly if you take your a/c out and the difference is noticeable right away. Drafty windows can account for up to 40% of your homes heat loss, and while I don't know yet what that means in dollars saved on our heating bill, I can say I am no longer chilly in my living room.

Spend a Couple Hours »Private Party Karaoke at Japas 27

jim sanders karaoke japas 27We've all been there: one long super fun night full of bad renditions of Skid Row and Soft Cell and the next thing you know, half the people invited took off after leaving about five dollars each are you're stuck with an outrageous happiness killing bill.

The first rule is to only invite people who are in it to win it, not every one you ever met, but even with that in mind for Jim's 30th birthday, I still wanted to find what I thought would be impossible: a place with a set rate and no price gouging. After years of fun but over-priced times elsewhere, I finally found what I was looking for at Japas 27.

Japas has several locations around the city, the first two I called were booked even a week before my event until midnight or later, so if you're planning a big group, I would definitely call at least that far ahead, if not more (you must call first, book a table, then fill out a form online once you're booked). I lucked out with the location on 27th Street, perhaps because it's been slammed on Yelp. The reviews (which you'll notice all came from the same party) had me a bit nervous, but we had a great time and encountered none of the problems the complainers touched on.

The deal is this: for $35 per person you have two hours in a private party room, unlimited karaoke, sushi rolls, appetizer platters, and unlimited drinks. Tack on two more hours for an additional $25 and you have an entire night with tax and tip for $70 a person, no questions, no issues, no confusion at the end of the night. The food was decent (much better than I expected) and the sake and pitchers of Sapporo sure did flow. No one was left standing straight or terribly coherent, especially because it's so hard to gauge how much you've drank from the tiny plastic cups. Fun times!

The selection of music was fine with maybe a little less R Kelly and Hall and Oates than I'd like, but there was plenty of Sir Mix A Lot, Britney, George Michael, Guns and Roses, Winger, and Bob Marley to go around. My sister and I started things off with a stirring rendition of D'Angelo's Brown Sugar, and we all remember Marcus's impressive baritone wrapped around the Oak Ridge Boys classic, Elvira. But the highlight for the birthday boy was a duet of Steely Dan's Deacon Blues.

I highly recommend this place, it's a rare find, but with one warning: once our party changed from 12 to 11 in number, they had to put us in a smaller room, and it was a bit tight to say the least. So, if you want a big room to stretch out in, invite and at least 12 people and make sure they come because you're responsible for paying for the number of guests you book, whether they show of not.

Still, rules aside, the staff was friendly, helpful on the phone, the food was fine and probably kept us from true disaster, the unlimited drinks really are unlimited and worth the bill alone, and there are plenty of song to choose from on good equipment that gave us no grief all night.

Desserts »Fortunato Brothers

fortunato brothersFortunato Brothers has been displaying tempting cakes in their windows at the corner of Manhattan and Devoe for a very long time, it's a still standing relic of the Italian neighborhood before gentrification, a spot that is still packed with all sorts of people as it's delicious desserts have managed remain popular with the changing times. But until this week, I had never made a trip there myself as long as I've been living here, and it's about time I did.

While service is kind of curt, the rows of home made treats makes up for it. Their light and flaky bow ties, sprinkled with powdered sugar were great. A regional Italian favorite, variations on these fried cookies are also called Cenci (rags), Chiacchere (gossips), Lattughe (lettuce leaves), Nastrini (ribbons), and “Lover's Knots.”

We also grabbed a few bright colored treats which we left as a New Years thanks to our evening's hosts including a giant cannoli with neon green pistachios, a sort of cupcake with a cherry on top, and a bright pink confection bound to make little girls go crazy.

I was also most tempted by an adorable New Years Bouche de Noel complete with marzipan toad stools, but we were short cash for it – they do not accept credit cards, so I'll have to save that seasonal delicacy for another time.
