Style Icons: Male »John Hughes

Everyone my age was deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of the man who gave a mainstream voice to contemporary teenage angst, woe and hilarity. John Hughes left behind so many iconic characters and scenes that will forever be ingrained in our collective memory that it's easy to forget his later creative drought.

Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Pretty in Pink?my god, the man was a genius. Our hearts go out to his family; I know we're all deeply grateful for his amazing legacy.

Songs »If You Were Here

sixteen candles if you were hereSigh. There are few songs that can evoke such deep and romantic emotions as If You Were Here by the Thompson Twins. Of course the impact of the song comes from it's inclusion in the iconic, most sigh inducing scene probably ever put to screen for girls that love to kiss cute boys. My little girl dreams were never the same after it.

Make a wish? It already came true. Thanks John Hughes!

Books »The Little Bitty Mousie

My dad's recent alphabet book The Little Bitty Mousie is absolutely adorable. Sure, I'm his daughter and therefore you might think I'm not the most objective reader, but the bright colors and realistic illustrations of a little girl mouse's late-night adventures are undeniably cute.

For me it's particularly exciting to see a few actual objects from my childhood home (including my brother's stuffed monkey) making an appearance; recently I've been handing the book out to everyone I know with a new baby because it's such a cute and charming book. The sing-songy poem is written by Jim Aylesworth.

Recipes »Homemade White Castles

white castles homemadeWhen I came across this White Castle recipe on A Hamburger Today, I immediately forwarded it to kitchen-experimenter extraordinaire, Mike. Just a few days later he offered to make the teeny sliders for us and you can't imagine how excited I was!
I heart White Castles and, even if it grosses you out, I eat the frozen ones all the time – especially if I've had some booze before bothering about dinner.

This recipe mimics the flavor and consistency of the originals pretty well thanks to the inclusion of some less than common hamburger ingredients. Even the usually die hard, let's-do-it-right dudes of AHT couldn't stomach the idea of adding beef baby food to their burgers (wusses!), but Mike went all out and the results were great.

He used mini potato buns, which worked perfectly size-wise, and fried up some finely chopped onions to complete the clone. As the latter batches of onions browned and caramelized, the home-made burgers tasted even better than the original.

Here's the recipe on AHT

TV Shows »The Interrogators

As a connoisseur of true crime television shows, I can definitively state that actual footage of under-cover busts, taped conversations, and interrogations are often the best part of any program. Enter The Interrogators, a new show on the Biography channel. Of course it's awesome and of course I love it.? There's an episode On-Demand if you're an NYC-area Time Warner customer, just search it out in the guide.?

Web Sites »Chained and Perfumed

I really can't recall how I came across the blog Chained and Perfumed but damned if I don't feel a kinship with their sensibility. From the site:

“This blog covers mostly pop culture garbage (mid to low brow). I am interested in music, old movies, television (though I haven't really followed a series since Buffy left the air), non fiction reading, old magazines(!), and celebrity gossip. My favorite movies as of late are Modesty Blaise, Bay of Angels and The Long Goodbye. My favorite band is The Beatles (Paul's my favorite but I like them all) and Pavement and lots more. I love old magazines.”

Sounds great to me! (except the whole Pavement hoopla, but I think that's just a boy thing).

Spend a Couple Minutes »Unleash Brooklyn

Unleash Brooklyn is such a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Not only is there now a near by pet store with truly helpful employees, but the food is healthier and not made with any questionable animal parts or practices. I Hop and Tiptoe (my adorable kitties) are particularly huge fans of the Evo brand Duck.

Even more impressive than the retail store are the facilities for boarding dogs and cats. The dogs get individual beds and a devoted caretaker that even sleeps nights in the same room. Kitties get impressive individual condos as well as a larger area for play.

Everyone that works here is devoted to animals and the stores philosphy:

“Quite simply, we built Unleash Brooklyn for our dogs and cats. We wanted a local place where our pets would receive top-notch care during the day or for an extended period of time.

Unleash Brooklyn is “Green” We built Unleash Brooklyn using recycled, shock-absorbing rubber mats and repurposed lumber. Our cleaning products are green and we implement earth-friendly materials whenever possible.

The concept behind our holistic loft is to bring some of the best professionals in pet care under one roof to redefine the standard of daycare and overnight boarding for dogs and cats.”

Spend a Couple Hours »Take Care of New York’s Trees

Help New Yorks trees! All it takes is your time and hard work. Jim and I spent the morning digging out bricks and bad soil and filling in the area with mineral rich top soil and lobster compost – both bought at the friendly Sprout down on Kent.

The kindness of strangers really came in to play with the project. Some neighbors offered their help in moving big bricks, others offered gloves and to take our bricks away.

Our work is still not done. Next we are getting tree guards installed – there are several iron workers locally that can do the job – and then we plan to plant some perennial ivy.

It's all to help our sidewalk tree thrive in an environment that usually ends up covered in trash.

Drinks »Rusty Knot

Can you fault a place for its douchey clientele? Not when it's The Rusty Knot, which serves such a delightful menu. There are few places that offer so many of my favorite things: spicy beer (cerveza Cubana, their refreshing and flavorful take on the michelada) and sides of pickles and oysters; even in a sea of pleated khakis, halter tops and going-out-pants, we had a great time.

The interior is tight with only a few coveted tables (one of which we hogged for hours) and a stupidly large pool table taking up most of the largest room. The theme is big-time nautical with a Polynesian twist, expect Tiki cups and lots of wood paneling; the drinks are cheap (regular beers start at 99 cents) and the general mood is low key, but any sense of divey-ness is carefully fabricated – the gentlemen behind the popular hangout come from Freeman's, Milk and Honey, The Spotted Pig, and Momofuku; a group well versed in what's hip and how to convey it without seeming to try too hard.

It's a skill that's made them very rich I'm sure, and I don't mind adding to their coffers when they're serving such yummy snacks and drinks – but next time I'll make a wiser decision than to go so close to the meatpacking district on a Saturday evening.
