Spend a Couple Minutes »Fall Shoes at Payless

No one ever listens to me, but Payless is a great place for shoes. Now, in a limited edition, Christian Siriano's pumps are available and Lela Rose, alice+olivia, and Abaete all have equally fun fall offerings.

Drinks »Dandelion Soda

Fentimans has been making botanical brews since 1905 in the UK; their flavors include those as familiar as cola and lemonade as well as the one we tried, Dandelion and Burdock: a traditional beverage in England since the 1200's(!), the combination was exotic to me.

Aniseed, ginger, pear juice and of course dandelion burdock make for an herbal and refreshing beverage. Our friend Mike found the soda at a local super market.

Desserts »Choxie

The always winning combination of salt and chocolate is the kind of thing that makes me extra sad for everyone that's passed on before it was invented… While I'm sure that I'm wrong and it's safe to assume that the two ingredients have probably been used together to great effect for centuries by wiser cultures, I feel like this flavor combo only hit the US in the past few years.

My mom sent me a bar of Target's store brand, Choxie's, take on the trend with added almonds – yummy!

Restaurants »Spicy and Tasty

A trip to Flushing for real Chinese food has long been on my list of to-dos and just the other week, it finally happened. Spicy and Tasty is a Schezwan spot highly recommended by foodies who debate over whether it's as good as it used to be on Chowhound. Nestled in a neon-lit side street off one of the most transporting areas of the city, where nary an English word is muttered and enticing Peking ducks hang from all the windows, the no frills restaurant boasts a no frills staff that was patient enough to inform us that we were accidentally ordering dessert as entrees and that what we thought was pork was chicken, what we thought was beef was pork, etc. Not, mind you, that the menu is terribly confusing, but we managed to make it that way.

Oh, and that dessert we ordered was a wonderful mistake: four little dumplings with a sweet peanut sauce filled with a sugar black sesame ooze. I almost never care for Asian desserts, I think my palette is too fat-American based in unnatural processed sugars (I still ate pop rocks in between classes in college), but this was great.

Acting on internet recommendations we tried the dan dan noodles, which we were instructed to “please stir”. They were delicious with a strong flavor and spice, a definite must for return visits. Also highly recommended was twice cooked pork – a frightening mound of glistening pork slices that were most akin to fatty strips of bacon. A delicious one bite to be sure but, as my co-eaters can attest (who did not stop at one strip), not the wisest thing to make a giant meal of, I did, however, savor the accompanying scallions. Speaking of scallions, the beef and scallions was good, like excellent delivery-caliber Chinese, but not quite worth writing home about.

The real gem of the night was the Mild Spicy Chicken Schezwan Style. Hands down, this bold, crispy, intricate dish was the best Chinese food I've ever had and I can't recommend that you order it enough. It delivered exactly what I was hoping for: the kind of meal that makes you rethink a national cuisine that has simply been butchered by too many poor renditions.

Style Icons: Male »Angus Young

angus youngAC/DC was a major symbol of a kind of frightening and exciting rebellion to me as an impressionable young lady. Older sisters of friends listened to it and told me while primping in in cosmetic filled bathrooms that the name stood for All Children Deceive Christ while meanwhile plotting the next beer stealing escapade with boyfriends' trucks from the local Safeway.

Angus Young's always been my favorite and with his devil horns and little boy school uniform, the most visible and emblematic of the group. Not a huge surprise since he's the one that started the whole thing. And, as much as I love the other stories about the name, in reality, when he formed the band as a undoubtedly rascally little teen in Scotland, the name AC/DC came from the back of his sisters sewing machine.

I personally missed the recent concerts, even had to say no to buying some tickets off a friend because of other obligations, but have read that he's still a wild man on stage.

Albums »Witchcraft

I was really in the mood for some sludge and after seeing that Black Sabbath Four was not available on itunes, found Witchcraft instead and was happy to hear that they fit the bill. I assumed from the low budget basement sound that the album was recorded decades ago but it's much more recent. The band probably would love to hear they managed to sound so authentic. From covering songs by Pentagram and literally recording in a basement, they seem happily entrenched in the sound of the past. They even look perfect with rock star long hair and

The Swedish band is on their way to be as underground and influential as the band that inspired them. The songs are dark and heavy and fans of Black Sabbath will be pleased so long as they don't mind the lack of catchy riffs. Her Sisters They Are Weak and Please Don't Forget Me are probably my favorites.

Style Icons: Female »Naomi Sims

naomi simsMove over Miss Campbell, there was a classy (non abusive) Naomi that ruled the fashion scene once and her name was Miss Sims. Truly the first African American model to reach Supermodel status, Sims was the face of the “Black is Beautiful” movement and later became a successful business woman.

The gorgeous icon died earlier this month of cancer but is remembered for the her trailblazing career.

Songs »Anger Is My Apple Tree

all torn up!Grace graciously invited me to the inner heart of the local mid afternoon socio-political angry punk metal scene last weekend to a All Torn Up! show at ABC No Rio. Lead singer/writer/screamer Chris Waller is a welcome addition to my personal parties and it was invigorating to see him lashing out with his music.

He plays often and you are guaranteed to smell the memorable scent of young boy sweat (which brought me right back to high school) and a woman that looks like a unicorn in human form if you attend one of their shows (the drummers lovely wife is the unicorn).

Our favorite song, especially in title is Anger is My Apple Tree. It comes from their self titled album and its about being angry.

Style Icons: Female »Kristen McMenamy

I simply can not get over the latest Lanvin Fall campaign that features the deathly pale, awesomely sexy Kristen McMenamy as a totally hot cat lady — there's very little on this earth that can make me as psyched as a totally hot cat lady.

Of course, the photos are by perennial genius Steven Meisel, but much of the credit goes to McMenamy, who has always been able to personify extreme non traditional fashion fantasies. Just think back on the famous Grunge and Glory editorial back in ?2. Sure, Marc brought the clothes, but she made them sing.
