Desserts »Almond Joy and Peppermint Pattie Pieces

Brilliant Candy

The second I saw the commercial for Peppermint Pattie and Almond Joy pieces I was obsessed – but where to find them? Weeks of searches in drug stores and malls left me convinced that I had been hoodwinked. The tiny morsels couldn’t be found anywhere… Until now!

I got a text message from a friend who knew I was looking for them the same night Jim found hidden bags at the local Rite Aid. All the anticipation didn’t end in disappointment, these are as great as I expected.

Spend a Couple Minutes »Washlet

The Evolution of Clean

At Soba-ya Jim returned to the table and told me to go to the bathroom with my camera – and that I might encounter an androgynous ghost!

If you’ve seen the Washlet on Found Footage Festival (which, from all the references lately, you can tell I’ve been watching repeatedly), you’ll know what that means.

The seat is heated, which was pleasant (though a friend who encountered the washlet in Japan likened it to sitting on a human body… eww). But I wasn’t sure how I felt about the warm stream of water meant for cleansing.

Fortunately, the restroom isn’t the highlight of the restaurant, so you can test the washlet out while also enjoying a great meal.

TV Shows »Life

on Discovery

Like the producer’s other show, Planet Earth, Life is awe inspiring and fantastic. But, and I’m probably going to get run down by one of her personal drivers for saying this, Oprah does not posses what one would call a melodious voice.

Chosen strictly for her status as confoundedly being one of the famous people on earth, she’s just not the exact person I would have chosen to describe verbally the wonders of animal life. But I’m sure I’ll get the British narrated ones on DVD, so I’ll move past this blunder.

Divided into species, each hour-long episode is transporting and features hunting, mating rituals, escape tactics and more that have never been captured on film before. I can’t recommend it enough.

Laughs »Teabonics

Creative Grammar and Spelling

I didn’t get born to this grate cuntry to go baroque, loss our feedom and speak any lanaguage that not english, be a red communiss with socilism!

Spoken like a true Teabagger, a fringe (at least, I hope fringe) group that has fascinated me from the beginning with their unwittingly dirty name. Here is a photo collection of their unique spellings on recent protest signs. Prepare to feel superior.

Recipes »Chicken Potato Dill Salad

from Monday-to-Friday Chicken

Potato salad is a grand dish I always look forward to once cookouts are in full swing. I jumped the seasonal gun a little bit with this Chicken Dill Potato Salad, which adds a punch of protein and garners main entree status with the addition of chicken.

Aside from the cook book, it can be found on Fresh Direct’s website.

Movies »Time Bandits

directed by Terry Gilliam (1981)

Time Bandits was a huge favorite of mine as a kid. A child’s wild adventure through the time of Napoleon, Robin Hood, Agamemnon, the Titanic, all while being pursued by both The Supreme Being and Ultimate Darkness, there’s little not to love for an imaginative youngster. Roger Ebert wrote, “the only live-action movie I’ve seen that literally looks like pages out of Heavy Metal magazine, with kings and swordsmen and wide-eyed little boys and fearsome beasts” which is pretty accurate. Gilliam is definitely hit or miss lately, but this, right in the middle of his most creatively satisfying period is one of, if not his very best.

Visually, there are images that are unforgettable as well as great performances by a studly Sean Connery, David Rappaport and personal lifelong obsession (and this week’s hunk) David Warner. If you missed this the first time around, or have a kid that isn’t too squeamish (the ending is surprisingly pitch black) be sure to give this gem a try.

Books »The Fig Eater

by Jody Shields (2000)

The Fig Eater, set in Vienna in early 1900’s, is less about the hideous crime at its center and more about creating a moody atmosphere, revealing the subtle relationships between friends and husband and wife while delving into the detective practices as well as the Gypsy superstitions of the time.

The historic detective novel is a genre made most famous by the Alienist and in the Fig Eater it works well as a framework for quite a brooding portrait of a time and place. The crime it follows is the murder of Dora, a victim based on a famous patient of Dr. Freud, who had unusual relationships with the older men in her life.

Both the unnamed Investigator and his Hungarian wife, Erzibet finds themselves desperate to unlock the mysteries of the girl’s death. He through the latest in criminalist technology and a devotion to the Enzyclopddie der Kriminalistik, the first psychological approach to crime while Erzibet follows and discovers clues through Gypsy rituals and intuitions.

In the right hands, this could be a beautiful and haunting film that in some ways could be even more effective than the book which, while nicely written and interesting, feels a tad distant.

Hunks »David Warner

Elegant and Sinister Character Actor

Just like this week’s dessert (Peeps), I’m righting a wrong by adding David Warner to my list of hunks. He’s such an obvious love of mine that I simply took it for granted that I had mentioned him here before. The veteran actor, often sinisterly cast, boasts a great career of character roles including Jack the Ripper (Time After Time), Evil (Time Bandits), and Master Control Program in Tron.

Style Icons: Male »Salvador Bartolozzi

Spanish Comic Innovator

I have simply fallen in love with the quirky style and unique color sensibility of Salvador Bartolozzi. While he may not be a household name here in the US, he was a famous innovator in Spanish comics in the 1920s. His work and career are well worth a look for any fans of illustration. Another great discovery from favorite blog Journey Round My Skull.
