Books »Ports of Call

by Jack Vance (1998)

I love me my Jack Vance, and Ports of Call might be one of his most unstructured and light sic fi adventures. There is limited story arch: Myron Tany finds himself fulfilling a dream of space adventure aboard his flamboyant and self centered Great Aunt’s space yacht. Soon however, he is ousted by a handsome rogue and finds a job aboard the cargo ship, Glicca. From there, he and his ship mates port at many different planets with various cultural customs and landscape curiosities.

A crazy lot of characters are met, including both amorous and deadly women, gamblers and swindlers of all sorts, and more than one evil minded rascal. It’s most like a very satisfying space adventure television series – or more correctly the kind of inventive and comedic space adventure television series that I wish existed (Firefly is the only thing that comes close – and should be watched by those who missed it’s brief run).

It’s a rambling piece of fiction, a collection of whims, philosophies and interesting worlds that ends quite abruptly. Luckily, years later, Vance took up the story again with a sequel called Lurulu, which, of course, I am reading next. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Songs »Turn the Page

by Bob Seger (1973)

Yes, Bob Seger’s been here before (see Still the Same). His songs are just too good to ignore. Turn the Page is a somber lament about a rock stars life on the road. I am particularly partial to the references to Midwestern boobs making fun of the long hair since both my dad and husband sport the do, I’ve seen the confused faces plenty. While Metallica’s take on the song was not as mismatched as one might expect, I still prefer the lonely original that evokes the empty sound of deserted roads passing by.

Style Icons: Male »Paco Rabanne

SciFi Fashion

This io9 article makes an interesting point about fashion taking more and more inspiration from the word of science fiction but modern science fiction turning its back on the world of fashion. If one man could merge the world of science fiction, entertainment and fashion it was Paco Rabanne. Well known for his far out metal dresses and stunning fantastic fashions for Barberella, Rabanne’s hey day were the swinging sixties, where as an enfant terribles he was a revolutionary visionary.

Style Icons: Female »Louise Bourgeois

Spiderwoman

While I’ve yet to see one of her famed outdoor pieces in person, the work of Louise Bourgeois in its sci-fi, daring disquietude is stunning to behold. Surely an icon for anyone in the sculpture and art fields, Bourgeois was 98 when she passed away from a heart attack last week. Considered the grand dame of contemporary art, she left behind a legacy of highly personal and unique art.

Desserts »Glazed French Cruller

The Best Kind of Donut

In honor of the recent Donut Day, I honor the best donut of all – The French Cruller. I love the glazed, or as my and Tina Fey’s favorite donut shop Peter Pan calls them, Honey Dipped. One of life’s best indulgences.

Drinks »Arnold Palmer

Lemonade and Ice Tea

The Arnold Palmer has always been a splendid beverage. The sweet tartness of the lemonade is tempered by the refreshing iced tea with wonderful results… but let me tell you, when you’re pregnant, it’s that great times a million.

Spend a Couple Hours »Brunch Party!

Sunday Perfection

Break out the mimosas, the bellinis, and the quiche – it’s a great time to have a brunch party! If you’re lazy like me, you can get the quiches from Fresh Direct and the world’s greatest donuts from Peter Pan. It took me a mere thirty minutes to get the whole shebang together. Throw in a few party games – Apples to Apples and a new game (to me) called Celebrity fit the bill nicely, and invite friends as awesome as mine who bring adorable babies, smoked oysters (!), homemade exquisite lemon meringue pie and it’s the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Spend a Couple Minutes »Financial Cosultation with Susan Lee

For Freelancers

While I am mostly excited about my new career path which is sure to be better for my little one, I was a bit intimidated by the whole freelance taxes stuff. I found a woman named Susan Lee through her extremely informative website Freelance Taxation that is full of information that any freelance artist can learn from. She also has a radio show called You and Your Money that you can listen to on WBAI 99.5 FM in New York City and is available for private consultation. I went to see her last week and had all my questions answered. Money and money related issues can be confusing and obnoxious to creative business people, so a specialist who can help you along your way (and is available to do your taxes too) is a god send. Tell her I sent you if you make an appointment.

Laughs »If TV’s LOST was a 1987 point-and-click computer game

by Penney Design

I am seriously kind of jealous of my friends that are watching LOST from the beginning for the first time (they are blissfully ignorant hug fest horror of the final scenes) and only just saw the numbers on the hatch (remember how cool that was?) But this Penney Design faux video game is a great, really well done inside joke fix for fans. Sadly, I can’t get the animated version to load, but the screen shots are priceless. Other modern films and shows the design team has worked up in faux 70’s and 80’s style video cartridges are Wall E, Snakes on a Plane, and Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
