Style Icons: Female »Bianca Jagger

bj1Lovely in White

The life of a mom of two is many things, many happy and wonderful things, but it is not glamorous. When I allow myself to pine for the days to come (and they are coming) where I don’t have to worry about breastfeeding and spit up spoiling an outfit, thoughts turn to fashionable, dynamic women – women who can wear white without it getting smeared with jam. So of course, I think of the maven of white suits – Bianca Jagger.

One time party wife of Mick, life of the most exclusive parties, and fearless activist, she owns every breast bearing, fur slung, glistening white ensemble she dons. A stunning woman with impeccable style.

TV Shows »Misfits

misfitsOn Hulu

Imagine if Heroes was raunchy and had a fabulous sense of humor. If that sounds intriguing do yourself a favor and watch the British import, Misfits.

The first three seasons are more fun, entertaining, smart and creative than I expected from a show with the premise of dirty mouthed, horny juvenile delinquents gaining super powers. With the compelling cast and innovative story arcs you might even end up emotionally invested.

Which is why I point out that it’s the first three seasons that are most notable. I’m in the middle of the fourth season now, which begins with just one remaining original cast member and at a point in the story where big mysteries have been solved. While season three suffered the loss of the charming Robert Sheehan, it carried on pretty well without him. Now, though, as much as they are trying, it feels forced, but I’m still watching since its more fun than most things out there.

Laughs »Bad Kids Jokes

bkjAwesome Tumblr

Anyone that says they can’t stand kids obviously hasn’t spent any time actually talking to them, because they are full of awesome nonsensical stuff to say.

Case in point: Bad Kid Jokes, a tumblr of jokes made up by kids. Some examples:

Why did the barn cross the road?

Because all the other animals were pooping on the other side

And

I have a butt

Sir we all have butts

Desserts,Recipes »Strawberry Marshmallow Cookies

photo-2from Confessions of a Recipe Junkie

High off my success at baking sugar cookies, I decided to get more inventive and found a delicious sounding Strawberry Marshmallow recipe that was very intriguing.

As I may have mentioned elsewhere, baking is not my speciality and the usual round of mishaps followed: I only had dark brown sugar instead of light, an extra trip to the store was required to get parchment paper, and when my egg broken open out plopped two yolks (which, I’d like to point out was entirely beyond my control).

Still, an interesting batch of cookies were made. They are cake-ier than I imagined and the marshmallows are sort of lost in the process. Once I got past my expectations, though, these were quite tasty – almost like a strawberry shortcake in cookie form.

PS: You, whoever you are, are presumably a better baker so yours will likely be even better.

Spend a Couple Minutes »Tattly

tattlyGreat Temporary Tattoos

“After applying many bad-clip-art tattoos on her daughter, swissmiss decided to stop complaining and take matters into her own hands. Tattly was born.”

Tattly is not only inspiring in a DIY business sense, but their temporary tattoos are fantastic. Not cheap, exactly, but fantastic.

Design super star Tina Roth Eisenberg has asked artists to contribute their art to fun, inventive, beautiful images you can wear on your person (and the quality is equally impressive too).

Van has had a great time with the Menagerie Set designed by Amy Blay and while it is currently sold out, new designs are added often.

Songs,Style Icons: Female »Patti Page, The Tennessee Waltz

patti“The Singing Rage”, 1950

The only thing lovelier than Patti Page was her voice. Her signature song Tennessee Waltz is one of my very favorites of all time.

If you are unfamiliar with her dreamy voice, I once recommended a great collection that would be a great introduction.

She passed away on New Years Day.

Drinks »French Press

fpBodum

Daily coffee shop visits are an expensive habit. Ultimately I had to be reasonable and fulfill my needs with a nifty Bodum French press.

We like to get beans from Upright but am trying to find the best fresh direct has to offer (any advice?).

It’s such a simple device that I can operate it on few hours sleep without anyone getting hurt. Hard to imagine life before it.

Style Icons: Male »Jeanloup Sieff

jeanloup-sieffPhotographer

The portraits by Jeanloup Sieff are iconic – in stunning black and white they are both intimate and sublime.

His editorial work is evocative and sensual. Yet, his name is not as well known as it deserves to be even as he images are instantly recognizable.

A recent publication (Sieff Fashion) and Colette gallery tie in will hopefully change that.

Sieff passed away in 2000, but his legacy is inspiring, timeless and beautiful.

TV Shows »Dr Who (the Matt Smith years)

Season 5…

What a difference a cast makes. I tried to like the Doctor Who reboot but despite a reasonable liking of Chris Eccleston, Billie Piper is not a favorite and the cornball tone was a turn off.

Recently, on a friend’s insistence that the show was worth watching, I took a peek at Season five. Ah! That’s the stuff! The redhead is charming and Matt Smith as the doctor? I’m not afraid to admit I’m smitten, head over heels for and totally crushing on him (a great jaw line and a bow tie are hard to resist). Thrilled to hear he’s signed on through 2014 at least.

It’s not just Matt Smith that deserves mention though. The imaginative writing is excellent and new creative direction from Stephen Moffat (who took over from Russell T Davies who is also behind the unbearable Torchwood) has completely reinvigorated the franchise.

I used to watch Dr. Who as a pre schooler while my disgusted sister played outside til it was over (she’s never gone for the dorky stuff). After decades, I can finally call myself a fan again.

TV Shows »Moomins

on Netflix

Moomins has all the makings of a cult classic but no one seems to know about it. This 1977-82 adaptation of Tove Jansson‘s endearing books features hallucinatory sets and characters that look like the work of an insane genius a soft spot for glitter and felt.

The tone is melancholy, sometimes sinister and often truly hilarious in its deadpan ways.

Van likes it but Jim and I are smitten. If you have netflix instant, take a look – yes, even if you don’t have children and certainly if you are stoned.
