This is a truly inspirational site for someone, like me, who has always shied away from most makeup, especially any dramatic looks. Samantha favors fashion and catwalk looks and Nicola prefers celebrity styling.

I stumbled across J.Cosmas Vintage Photography quite by accident but was immediately drawn into the arresting images.

Surely I am not the only one among us that can’t resist the eyes of the past and if you too are a fan of vintage portraits, this is an incredible collection.

Priced reasonably, these would make a great gift for the lover of antiquities in your life.

The website is well organized, with large, clear scans, and informative and enthusiastic descriptions. Clearly, they have a passion for their trade (and the passionate are the most fun to buy things from).

Plus, they’re based in one of my favorite American cities, Providence.

A Field Guide to Wild American Pulp Artists

Thanks so much to my mom for letting me know about the amazing site, Pulp Artists that not only boasts a seemingly inexhaustible collection of dime store mystery and sci fi art, but does a great job of giving the artists their due with biographies and even photos.

It’s wild to see how many artists did work for the pulp market, from the famous (Norman Rockwell) to the home town heroes (Zoe Mozart was born in Colorado Springs!).

I am impressed that David Saunders was able to get so much information and present it in such an organized, easy to browse manner (more sites could take his queues).

Give yourself some time to look through it all. By the end you’ll be itching to read stories about blackmail and alien robots.

A Magazine for Groupies

Oh yes!!

If you remember, eons ago I discovered a little gem called Star Magazine – a publication devoted entirely to the art of being a groupie. The site I marked then is now all gone, but in it’s place has emerged Star1973, an amazing site where you can find all five editions scanned front to back (!!)

I am dying with excitement.

Ryan Richardson gets major props for sharing this with the world (and for all that scanning – if I only had half the time and patience for my own vintage mag collection…).

I can’t wait to really spend some time with this one – I mean, come on, just look at the article below. The Girl Who Fights Over Guys – Will You Be Ready To Face Her?.

It just so deliciously brazen and upfront about it’s goal – to help you, the young groupie, bed rock stars (even if you have to bust some heads to get into Alice Cooper’s bed).

And the fashions! Girls and boys alike would be dropping over dead in the streets if these ladies were to strut down Bedford Avenue today.

A Vintage Life

My dear friend Stacy has been a partner in crime during my few solo outings- whether to gobble Malaysian and gossip or sip pink champange at the Metropolitan Opera House. She’s also, and always will be, no matter how many days go between seeing each other, one of my spirit sisters.

We share an affinity for the voice of Sandy Denny, odd remnants of the past (particularly the turn of the century and the 1990’s), heavy metal tee shirts, and intricate embroidery among many other good things.

Her musings, inspirations, and heads up on the latest awesome vintage pieces she’s procured (that you can buy at her shop!) can all be found at her tumblr page. I only wish she was less busy actually doing amazing stuff to update it constantly!

Vogue Magazine 1965-1975

Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love Youthquakers!!

These wonderful people have posted large scans of British and American Vogues from 1965-1975. A Golden Era, if you ask me, before Jennifer Aniston took every third cover. If I had the time, resources, and energy, I wish I had provided a site so complete and excellent on the subject – lucky for us all, someone else has done a bang up job.

Not only are there tons upon tons of amazing photos from Bailey, Newton, and Avedon of Anjelica Huston, Lauren Bacall, and Twiggy to name just a few – but it’s also very easy to search by subject, photographer, or date.

This is really quite a feat and very time consuming no doubt, so much, much thanks to the people behind this. I’ve only skimmed a few issues and am already fawning and excited. A must visit for fashion, photography and vintage lovers.

Fab Blog

Retrospace is a new discovery for me and a great, constantly updated treasure trove of all things retro: from long forgotten magazines, catalogues, found photographs, TV shows and books. There are also Podcasts that feature old radio ads, novelty songs and other intriguing oddities.

The archives go back three years, so I have only really scratched the surface but I am in love already. Any blog where you can find Mexican porno mags from the 70’s and a history of stewardess outfits through the decades is alright with me. Do set aside some real time to go through it all.

Cheap, Often Slutty and Awesome Shoes

OMG. I totally found an online equivalent to the now long gone Square One – the awesomest cheap/hooker shoe shop where I used to get the most amazing, often neon ten dollar shoes from.

It’s called Urbanog or “Urban Originals” and I have Refinery 29 to thank for introducing me to it in a summer wedge round up.

It looks like a cheesy site and it is a cheesy site, but when it comes to shoes, cheesy can often yield the best and funnest.

Cheap shoes and used books – my biggest weakness and now both can be fulfilled online.

And, yes, I bought the crazy shoe pictured.

Daily Purchase Drawings, Etc.

The idea of seeing one person’s daily purchases may sound a bit boring, but with the whimsical hand of Kate Bingaman Burt, it’s enchanting. Even corporate logos look interesting when hand drawn, plus it makes you think about your own consumption and will inspire you to draw more.

Her project was published as a book called Obsessive Consumption and her unique style has graced the advertising of companies like Target and Madewell. She’s at the forefront of the handmade mini revolution.

Small Spaces, Big Dreams

I always prefer a small house to a large one. When many people crave open floor plans and sky high ceilings, I’d rather cozy into one of those hobbit holes (as long as I had a second hole to store my clothes).

But my love for small spaces pales in comparison to Kent Griswold’s. From yurts to cabins, campers to houseboats, if it’s tiny and it’s a house you can find it at his Tiny House Blog.

Ignore if you can that it’s littered in ads – the content is great. Most of the entries deal with serious information on how to build, live in and find your own little spaces. But for those of you who are, like me, less of the “doing” type, there are also tons of beautiful photos to browse whilst dreaming of hobbit living.
