Style Icons: Male »Brad Dourif

brad dourifOne of the greatest and most fun actors our nation has to offer and he is still mostly a B list character actor; recognizable but not known. The first time I took real notice and needed to learn the name Brad Dourif was his
brilliant and creepy performance in The Eyes of Laura Mars.

You may recognize him from a myriad of places: As the voice of Chucky, as the doctor on Deadwood, as Wormtongue in Peter Jackson's most inspired bit of casting in Lord of the Rings, in David Lynch's Dune and Blue Velvet, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, as the Gemini killer is the flawed but worth renting Exorcist 3, in one of the best X-Files “Beyond the Sea”, and other tv shows like Star Trek, Tales from the Crypt, and Wild Palms.

In short, he has had an awesome career and I can't wait to get his autograph at a nerd convention. (Which, by the way, if anyone knows when one is in the NY area, let me know).

Style Icons: Male »Kirk Hammett

kirk hammettIf you have seen, and you should if you haven't, the great documentary Metallica – Some Kind of Monster, you know that Kirk Hammett is the heart of the group.

He is one of the world's greatest guitar players, whose “Enter Sandman” riff is instantly recognizable. He is also a Buddhist with a good heart and a passion for comic books, Boris Karloff, and soloing. Proof that there is such a thing as a nice guy in Heavy Metal.

I also commend him on holding out on cutting his hair (although I have seen photos of him with short hair, so he must have given in at some point.)

Style Icons: Male »Christian Dior

christian diorIt is nearly impossible to imagine the world of fashion without the influence of Christian Dior . He took the severity of the 1940's, which, speaking in generalizations, is one of my least favorite eras in fashion, and brought back the femininity of fashion with his still inspirational “New Look” of 1947.

His house carried on being helmed by St. Laurent, Gianfranco Ferre, and presently, John Galliano, after his possibly somewhat sordid death. To be honest, tough, I am finding few people who make my style icon list that didn't have something sordid in their life, (is there a connection?)

Style Icons: Male »Robert Johnson

Robert JohnsonConsidered the true father of modern rock and roll and rumored to have soul his soul to the Devil for musical infamy, Johnson is remembered speculatively as a legend more than a man (only two photographs even exist).

Even his death is full of mystery, supposedly he was served poisoned whiskey by a lover's husband. His influence is never cause for speculation; he recorded only 29 songs that changed the world.

Style Icons: Male »The Kurgan

KurganI want it made clear that I do not endorse tossing children in pits with hungry dogs to fight for meat or any of the evil things The Kurgan (whose race, the Kurgans, really existed) generally stands for, but you must admit he is the coolest thing about Highlander and he certainly has a style.

From bone armor to asymmetrical punk rock, he always looked like the ultimate bad ass of his time. By the way, not only is Clancy Brown awesome, so is Highlander's editing and cinematography. So much done with so little with no thanks to Sean Connery.

Style Icons: Male »Buckminster Fuller

Buckminster FullerAs many of you may know, I dream of one day living in a geodesic dome house, much to the chagrin of Jim. Mr. Fuller is the forward thinking architect behind the dome. Fuller was more than an architect however, he was a poet, a cosmologist, inventor, engineer, mathematician and transcendentalist.
He believed that by fairly distributing, what he referred to as Spaceship Earth's resources through efficient design and integrity, a decent life could be made to all people.

A very influential and inspiring man, who I will one day think of fondly as I am sitting in my geodesic dome home.

Style Icons: Male »Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five

Grandmaster FlashThese guys make my style list for those amazing costume outfits, although I know they have also paved the way for other elements of style especially in music. But to be honest, the impact of rap music was most dramatic on me years and years ago when I took a breakdancing class for example (yes, that is completely true and, yes, I was completely inept – my major move during the “final” dance circle was kind of making my arm look like it was waving), Grandmaster Flash also led the way for myself and my “bad” friend Holly to sit up listening with awe and fascination the dirty ditties of Eazy-E in sixth grade (“Once Bitten Twice Shy” was my other vice at the time).

Since those days I've become out of touch with this new “hip hop” culture that the kids are raving about.

Style Icons: Male »Claude Francois

Claude FrancoisHe is considered the Elvis Presley of France, honest. He brought the American Rock and Roll sound to France in the sixties and ran with it — all the way to sequined orange suits, amazing backup dancers, and fantastically absurd choreography. When I first saw this video all I could think was yes, yes, YES! This is how I would perform if I were a singer only with Alice Cooper blood and guts theatrics thrown in.

Nicknamed Clo-Clo by his legions of fans, Francois left those fans terribly heart broken when he died electrocuted in his bath tub at the age of 39. Here and here are more videos to watch to make you fall in love with Clo – Clo like I know you will.

Style Icons: Male »Wes Anderson

Wes AndersonLove, love, LOVE the corduroy suits. They can even make me forget that I hated Life Aquatic. But hey, everyone has their missteps. I also find a good sense of humour important in a style icon, and Anderson clearly has one (see laugh of the week). And besides, I'm pretty sure Anderson is a “hipster” and you know my feelings about “hipsters” – I like them. So there.

I should also mention he dons a scarf nearly all the time and you know my feelings about scarves, pretty much the same as my feelings about “hipsters“.

Style Icons: Male »Amon Duul II

Amon Duul IISo my obsession with Amon Duul II is complete, how could it not be with their German commune life, their two drummers and insane singers, these videos, and their lyrics about funerals, aliens, and alien funerals. Where have they been all my life? I had never heard of them until I stumbled on to them last week. See, life is full of new and pleasant surprises.
