Spend a Couple Hours »Fairway Market

fairway market specialsLike any massive grocery store, Fairway is a madhouse at noon on a Saturday. If you don't have to use a cart, don't! It will only make your journey through the store, snaking your way between graying, entitled, rich looking dads that much more difficult. Do expect lines at all the counters, thoigh I found the wait for cheese to be well worth it; the selection was staggering: we got a Gouda, a cheddar, an ash covered chevre, a bright orange cheese that looked interesting, and a mild sheep's milk cheese that the cheese man recommended. Our friends devoured them all with relish.

There is a nice olive bar, lots of ready made foods and, if you have the time and patience to look, probably anything else you could dream of or want. I will make my next trip at a less busy time in order to take it all in as most of it was a blur of good looking food.

Spend a Couple Hours »Civilization IV

civilization 4 city screen shotWhen the totally brilliant Sid Meier introduced Civilization in 1991, words can barely describe the joy and excitement the game brought into my life. Here was a new type of game (later labeled 'turn based strategy') in which you didn't have to play with violence. At least, I don't. I know for most players, long term wars are the point of the game, but I just like to build big culturally significant metropolises named after my pets and friends.

Civilization IV, released in 2005, is the newest edition and it has sucked me back into hours of zoned out fun. I just can't help it, I love the game and love it even a bit more now that The Dude is lending his voice to it.

Spend a Couple Hours »Pirates of Penzance

pirates of penzanceI would have to say that the Gilbert and Sullivan Players are for Gilbert and Sullivan fans only, who on a matinee seem to be old people and parents wishing to instill a love for the theater in their young children – with mixed results. Seriously, anyone not knowing what they're in for: the repetitive sing songy tunes and pun based humor will not be pleased. I know a few friends that probably would have killed me for taking them.

If you are ready for some silly fun, however, continue on. The cast, consisting of the Vicar of Dibley, Paul Stanley, and my friend Julia's husband Edward, or at least actors that closely resemble them, were charming in this straight forward and tame performance of Pirates of Penzance. The Major General, however was the crowd favorite – garnering particularly enthusiastic applause for the impressive “Model of a Major General” song.

Unfortunately, the only drawback is that you may have to strain to see the actors at all, or at least view them through a shadowy veil of thinning hair. The NY City Center is a lovely theater which was built in 1923 as a meeting hall for the members of the Ancient Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine -?but the mezzanine seats were not quite elevated enough each row to make viewing easy.

Spend a Couple Hours »Bowling at Gutter

gutter bar brooklyn bowlingIt's been a great year for Williamsburg. Both a beer garden and a bowling alley opening is cause for celebration alone, but everyone should be over the moon that they both have been done so well.

Gutter has been open for months now, but I visited only recently myself, fearing major crowds from all the excitement its addition to the neighborhood has caused. It is the first bowling alley to open in Brooklyn for fifty years, after all.

We went on a quiet Saturday afternoon at about 4 and while we still had to wait a little less than an hour for our turn at one of the eight lanes, it hardly mattered a bit. See, Gutter also consists of a large, comfy bar where you can wait in the comfort of a booth with a pitcher of Six Point Sweet Action surrounded by vintage weird prints hanging on the walls and tiffany bar lamps overhead advertising various beers and patriotism.

I said it made me feel like I was somewhere like Wisconsin – I've never been to Wisconsin – but despite that fact, I wasn't far off. All the insides of the place were purchased from an old bowling alley in the Midwest, according to Gothamist.

When your number comes up on the light board, it's time to grab your shoes and bowl. The lanes too feel old and worn in, in a good way – though our lane was slightly wonky and took a while to return our balls. Everyone had a great time and in an accomplishment I can only accredit to my Wii bowling practice, I bowled better than ever before. I (seriously) bowled a 20 or so the last time I tried, but scored a respectable 88 at Gutter.

The only problem we found is that we were enjoying ourselves so much that we really wanted to add another game to our session. Due to fairness of the people waiting, though, we had to graciously retire for the evening. So make sure you book enough games for yourself when you get your shoes.

Spend a Couple Hours »Train Show

nybg train showThe New York Botanical Gardens, which are magnificent in scope and grandeur, plays host to the spectacular Train Show that is truly a must see. The large greenhouses are transformed into a miniature, magical version of the city with hand crafted versions of actual building like Yankee Stadium and the Empire State Building made of natural materials like leaves, sticks and berries. These quaint and sometimes impressive little buildings, and bridges are nestled among lots of greenery and blooms.

Parents and children alike were delighted. It was one of the least disappointing excursions we've taken all year. I had been meaning to go since we moved here, but the slightly high cost, the distance, and the weather have always kept me at bay. I promise you all inconveniences that may be associated with the trip are well worth it. I was also extremely pleased to find that the twenty dollar admission included the rest of the gardens.

Make sure then to visit the library, the rain forest and cactus rooms, and explore as much of the grounds as are open in the winter.

Spend a Couple Hours »Office Party

office partyIt's Holiday Office Party season here in New York, and all the weblogs are having a field day with coverage on the big ones. Oshkosh B'gosh held festivities a bit smaller and with less strippers and cocaine than say, Marc Jacobs or Village Voice, but we had a grand old time at The Delancey with an open bar, munchies, and the slurred, excited conversations that obviously followed.

I'm lucky enough to work in an office full of nice, fun and interesting people, and meeting all their significant others is one of the highlights of an office party. I know I talked the ear off of many of them, but let's just pretend I was all charm and wit rather than a bore or worse. But, see, that's the other great thing about office parties, everyone is a little looser in the tongue, letting their hair down, and there's no judgments, because we're all in the same “too much vodka, too little food” boat.

Happy Holidays indeed!

Spend a Couple Hours »Rock Band

rock band video gameMy lack of certain hand eye coordination is no secret. It was evident every time I fail to ride a bike, the time I tried to learn guitar, a fiasco I continue, with more than a hint of a straight face, to blame on my small hand size and only resulted in a serious hatred of the song Losing My Religion which I picked as the first (and ultimately the last song to learn).

It is most noticeable when I go real life bowling (not wii bowling – I absolutely rip on that and even set records when I have had a couple old fashions) but in real life I am so bad, that a group of men were laughing and taking photos the last time I played. (Actually that is false. I thought in a haze of shame and paranoia that they were taking photos of my failings – an easy assumption to make as they were seated directly behind me and looked the type – but it ends up they were photographing their kids in the next lane. Note to anyone who wants to use me as an inspiration for a novel – my tragic flaw could be paranoia – my charming flaw that will make male readers age 12-24 fall in love with me is the whole hand eye coordination that is the focus of this ramble).

Jim shares my inability. Just ask about the time we got stuck (and never unstuck by the way) at a rope and box jumping challenge in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

So, not surprisingly, we were the weakest link in Rock Band – but it is so fun, no one cared. Our whole family got involved in this generous surprise from my mom for thanksgiving. My brother, sister and cousin went way farther in the game when Jim and I were standing in the sidelines. Although I could sing – frankly anyone can – just ask my sister's boyfriend's crazy monotone whaling.

There is a major flaw to the game, and it all comes down to dollars. I think they just couldn't get the rights to that many songs – I must have sang Mississippi Queen thirty times over the holidays. Eventually, there will be many more to download, but each will cost money. Perhaps the remarkably reasonable price of the game and the sweet drum, guitar, and mic (under $200) helps to make up for that kind of spending.

Still it's a rocking time and perfect for gatherings.

Spend a Couple Hours »Listen to the Technicolor Web of Sound

Technicolor Web of SoundThis internet radio station is so totally far out groovy, you might feel like the Z Man himself, Ronnie Barzell, is hand picking every track. Some of these songs are fairly well known (you're going to hear a lot of Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Donovan songs that are pretty familiar to our demographic by now), but the real gold is stuff I never even knew existed. Here's a list of the songs they've played since I tuned in tonight:

Electric Flag – Synesthesia
The Orange Swirl Society – The Fourth Pipe
Jefferson Starship – Let's Go Together
The Electric Prunes – Get Me To The World On Time
Acid Talk – LSD Warning
Chris Carpenter – This World (Is Closing In On Me)
Kaleidoscope – To Know Is Not To Be
C.A. Quintet – Fortune Teller's Lie
The Scandal – Girl, You're Goin' Out'a My Mind
Blue Cheer – Peace Of Mind
Traffic – Medicated Goo
Dave Davies – Creeping Jean
The Kinks – Death Of A Clown
The Rolling Stones – Dandelion
Rocky Cabbage – Birds Must Learn To Fly
Eire Apparent – Yes, I Need Someone
H.P. Lovecraft – At The Mountains Of Madness
Donovan – Season Of The Witch
Colosseum – The Kettle
The Beatles – I Want You (She's So Heavy)
Small Faces – Red Balloon

While a couple of those songs aren't so unfamiliar; the majority are totally new to me. And while it's true that in some cases the band names are actually a lot more memorable than the music itself, a few of these songs are pretty amazing. The Electric Flag and H.P Lovecraft tracks are awesome and worth serious investigation.

And then there are the ads. I'm sure you've heard me say before that if I ever owned a radio station I'd broadcast entire segments from the past: the songs, the banter and the ads; just as it went out from 2 to 3pm on December 1st, 1954.?Isn't that a great idea?

Well, that's exactly what they do at TWoS. The ads are phenomenal, 'Have you ever been to a Psychedelic Circus?' asks a man with the kind of authoritative male radio voice you just don't hear on the airwaves these days. There are ads for Easy Rider, local concerts, Coca Cola, the new Chad and Jeremy record… the programming and selection of these vintage spots is pretty amazing.

I'm not going to say I don't love Classic Rock, I do, but there's so much amazing stuff from the psychedelic era that never made it to the Clear Channel stations that pretty much defined the rock lexicon I grew up on that this station is a God send. We were so excited when we got into Amon Duul II, it had been such a long time since we'd come across something so radical–and we only discovered it because Brittany was pouring over allmusic for hours–you're not going to hear Amon Duul II on this station, but I can guarantee that you will get turned on (get it?) to at least one new band within an hour of work day listening.

I always pretty much figured I was relatively familiar with the sounds of the '60s. I'm not; not at all–and that's awesome. Please enjoy.

Spend a Couple Hours »Spending Time With a Baby

I couldn't possibly come up with a better way to spend a few hours of joy than with a bouncing baby; even though every time I do, I am reminded that I don't look nearly mature enough to have one of my own, but more like a scared babysitter.

This Thanksgiving I had plenty of squirmy wormy time with one of the cutest in the whole world, my second cousin Braden, a smiley bundle of joy who delivered for hours of squealing delight.

It works out for everyone involved. While you can enjoy the smell of baby's brand new skin, the touch of soft baby hair, and the excitement of holding a new life in your arms, mommy and daddy can take a break for once and relax with some Baileys.

Baby time is also good for your muscles. After two days of baby holding I got “baby arms” – sore muscles that have made me walk around like a T-Rex and make it difficult to pull my pants up.

It's rare that we get to see many babies, but happily we're getting to the age where some friends are having or have had their own.

I always am encouraging people to make more babies for me to play with, so why not you?

Spend a Couple Hours »Woodbury Commons

diane con furstenberg dressWoodbury Commons, just one hour from the city in the town of Harriman, at the base of Bear Mountain, is a singular shopping destination for this area.

Not only are there high end outlets like YSL and Chanel, but it's home to the only Diane Von Furstenberg outlet in the country, where beautiful dresses that originally cost 200-700 dollars can be purchased for half that (or sometimes even less if they're marked down).

You can also stop by Oshkosh, and this Spring, take a look at the first collection I've worked on for them.

Other highlights are the aforementioned YSL, where everything is still too expensive for me – but lovely to look at – and Saks Fifth Avenue – Off 5th, a store that often has some nice pieces, but not at the bargain you'd find in other Off 5ths.

I recommend you eat before hand, as the food selections are second rate, and I highly recommend a hike through Doodletown (this week's place to visit) afterwords.
