Spend a Couple Hours »Odds Costume Rental Sale

odds costume rental saleThere are days in my little life that go down forever in my personal shopping history (remember the $5 sale at that weird Off Fifth in Worcester, Stacy?) and Tuesday was definitely one of them. Odds Costume Rental is closing its doors, a sure tragedy in many respects, but the warehouse wide sale that accompanies the bad news is one of the most mind blowing and heart stopping experiences for fans of costume and vintage. I am indebted to Diane for the tip and am thrilled to pass it on to you.

From 1930's evening gowns, to layered embroidery gypsy skirts, from police uniforms to Carmen Miranda hats, the place will make your head spin with the possibilities. There are even racks and racks of men's stuff, though I didn't peruse them with any detail.

The prices are not dirt cheap, but extraordinarily reasonable for the exceptional quality and uniqueness of the garments. The only downside of the experience is that “insiders”, mostly performers and friends, seem to get slightly better deals than people like me that just wear this stuff on the stage of life. It was a little heart breaking to see one of the in crowd get lots more than me for the same price, but hey – $85 for a fully beaded flapper dress, $30 for the cutest, weirdest 80's poof dress this side of Betsy Johnson?I really can't complain can I?

There is a dressing room, in which you must be prepared to bare it all with a gaggle of other shoppers and it's only right that you put back the pieces you decide not to buy – I can't imagine the head ache abandoned dresses give the boisterous ladies who run it. Plus, they'll yell at you if you make their day more difficult.

The sale goes on until July 1st, and if I had infinite cash and time (and arm muscles – hauling this stuff still has me shakey) I could go back every day until then. But, fortunately, I do have some self control, and I'll just send everyone I know there every day instead.

Phew, I'm still buzzing from the thrill.

Spend a Couple Hours »Picasso Mosqueteros

Picasso MosqueterosThe Picasso Mosqueteros exhibit at the Gogosian Gallery is a wow display and one that many people (not just me) who've seen it will urge you to visit; you'd be wise to heed our advice. Just the size of the collection is impressive, more like a museum show than a standard gallery-sized operation – and the space is great for the ten huge paintings; it's wonderful to step back and see a wall full of vibrant color and shapes.

The work itself is from a very contained time period, when Pablo (in his later years) was clearly mesmerized by the history of art (particularly Rembrandt and Goya it would seem), his wife/muse Jacqueline Roque and musketeers and conquistadors.

While I love some of the more colorful works, particularly those with dark muted background like the one pictured, some of the most inspiring pieces are the black and white etchings and drawings.

Crowded even early in the day, this is a show (which ends June 6) not to be missed by Picasso fans – and I promise that those of you that don't count yourselves in that group will still be pretty amazed.

Spend a Couple Hours »Framing and Hanging Your Art

Framing art is notoriously pricey, so much so that Jim and I have been squirreling away money to do it. We were lucky to find the little shop Imagic Studio down the street (where we got our hideous passport photos taken), to be reasonable, helpful, and efficient. Our walls have been bare since we moved into this place, but no longer!

With the help of Jim's dad our bedroom is now home to an adorable BB&PP Inc print and our old WR: Myteries of the Organism and Godard posters hang in the living room with our newly framed Eggleston poster (I found a guy that sells subway posters and ads if you're ever interested). A huge (67″ tall!) print is at the shop as we speak and, despite the high price tag, it will all be worth it. After all, these are pieces we'll have forever.

We decided in the end to forgo the expense for our over sized Blood Beach and Joysticks posters and are currently on the lookout for a cheaper solution. A friend recommended pictureframes.com.

Spend a Couple Hours »Wii Fit

mii wii fitWiiFit is fun and good for you with those cute little graphics that Nintendo is known for (though I wish our instructors were more wobbly head looking and less realistic) but I have to say, it's not the toughest workout ever – though some of the balance games are hard to master and I never do well when it comes to following dance steps.

Taking virtual jogs with miis and wiis and Nintendo doggies right beside me is quite a joy and the system will also be great for accurately measuring my progress as Jim and I have begin a new summer time get back to eating right and exercising phase.

There is a definite focus on balance, a focus that I think seems foreign to westerners but I hope that, as it promises, will improve my posture.

I haven't gotten any additional games to go with the system yet, but anything called Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party must be fun, right?

Spend a Couple Hours »Sleepwalk With Me by Mike Birbiglia

sleepwalk with me mike birbigliaI can probably just address this post directly to Mike Birbiglia since I know that he'll get a Google alert soon enough, and Mike (whose last name, even with concentrated effort, I have difficulty pronouncing correctly) let me assure you that this brief recommendation will not include any insults of your physique. In the hipster comedic universe, where the relatively unskinny Zack Galifinakis is the hottest man ever, I don't think you have anything to worry about anyways.

The one man show, Sleepwalk with Me, which many of you might recognize from the ubiquitous subway poster, is extremely charming and funny. Focusing on his own experiences with illness and an extreme sleep disorder that once had him jumping out of motel window in the middle of the night, the personal anecdotes speak to larger truths. I was laughing to the point of shaking several times, but be warned that the show is peppered with sudden emotionally poignant pitfalls that can even bring one to tears if, say you've had a few margaritas before entering the theater.

Playing at the intimate Bleeker Street Theater, we were able to get obstructed tickets for under $30 from Theater Mania but truthfully, the performance is well worth full price admission. Portions of the show have appeared on This American Life, but there's plenty of stuff you haven't heard on WBEZ.

Spend a Couple Hours »Plant a Tree

Our building recently planted trees along the sidewalk (full disclosure, my harder working neighbors are the ones to thank, I was away). Planting trees, which is the activity Arbor Day is centered around removes CO2 from the air, produces oxygen, beautifies the city, and helps to fight global warming.

To get involved and plant a tree yourself, take a look at this week's website A Million Trees NYC.

Spend a Couple Hours »Take a Nap

cat nappingIf you're like me and lots of people I talk to, work has just been wearing you down to the bone right theses past couple of months. I think if we can ever find the time, we could all just a cue from our cats and those countries smart enough to believe in Siestas and take an afternoon nap.

There are some real health benefits too, just listen to the beginning of this article:

“Many people feel a mid-afternoon slump in mood and alertness, especially after a poor night of sleep. Many believe that this slump is caused by eating a heavy lunch. However, in reality, this occurs because we were meant to have a mid-afternoon nap.”

Spend a Couple Hours »Bachelor and Bachelorette Parties

toni's angels danceEveryone has a bachelor/ette story to tell. There was the time my sister disappeared from her own party leaving myself and friends in various states of unease as oiled men humped up. Stacy woke the next morning to find baby powder and grease ball sack stains on her Gucci skirt. Or my friend Laura who found a pack of dancers a bit too over zealous as they grabbed guests ankles over their heads and began going to town with their groins. A less stripper based story involves the groom vomiting all over the restaurant dinner table.

By far though, the most disturbing tale comes from my good friend Mike who was witness to Toni's Angels, a NY based “company” that has scarred he and everyone who's heard the story for life. It's way too dirty to detail here, but let's just say it all began with the ladies laying down a tarp. Beer bottles, a homemade song called “Eatin' Pussy” and a groom with an issue with germs followed.

Spend a Couple Hours »Host a Party Pio Pio Riko

Ballet Folklorio Mexican YavidaxiuWe have gorged on half chickens and rice and beans at the local Pio Pio Riko for years but never did I guess that on Fridays, the place turns into our own Peruvian Sammy's Romanian Steakhouse with entertainment and fun times. I found out recently when a friend decided to throw a going away party here for my dear friend Laura, who is moving to California (whether it breaks all our hearts or not).

The hostess who helped plan to party promised lots of surprises. Their weekend lounge singer, a charismatic and mysterious woman behind a piano sang California Dreaming and California Girls in dedication to our friend's new West Coast adventure. But I was most taken with her sultry, slow Oops I Did It Again that followed The Wall by Pink Floyd.

The real, very special treat, however was a spirited performance by Ballet Folklorio Mexicano Yavidaxiu, a group of beautiful dancers keeping the traditional dances of their countries alive. The costumes, particularly a sequined floor length skirt and the magnificent floral hairpieces were stunning. They helped make a special night even more so.

Seriously, if you live locally and are looking for a place to host a large party at no huge cost, I can't recommend Pio Pio Riko high enough. They were gracious and the staff had as much fun as we all did.

We were told a ladies night is happening soon that also promises some major surprises…
