Songs »Willie the Pimp

Willie the Pimp There are some things you like the idea of, but just can't get into in practice. I don't know if I just wasn't ready, if the music was too inaccessible or if it was his silly kin that are always mucking about, but Frank Zappa was always one of those things … until a few days ago. Jim and I watched a portion of 200 Motels (talk about inaccessible) and I really wanted to hear the song “Mystery Roach” performed in the movie by the Mothers of Invention (see style icon).

Jim said if I liked that maybe I would like some of the songs off Hot Rats (which by the way has the greatest cover). When Willie the Pimp was played I was sold. What an awesome, stimulating rock anthem with great vocals by Captain Beefheart.

Songs »Lexicon Devil

Lexicon Devil - The Germs Having died of an intentional drug over dose (under a sign that read “Here Lies Darby Crash”), Crash's Germs have only one album which was release posthumously. Lexicon Devil is my favorite of the few Germs songs. If you've ever seen The Decline of Western Civilization, you know the raw, insane, and wildly charming antics of Crash and can morn the upcoming movie starring some dude from “Boy Meets World” and Dracula 2000.

Songs »Your Cover’s Blown

belle and sebastian books In a raucous and invigorating performance of this song at the Times Square show Thursday, Belle and Sebastian single handedly renewed my enthusiasm for live music. It is such a fun funtime song: B&S meets Midnight Star who invites Adam and the Ants. If you’re feeling blue (or sinister) listen to this one and you’ll forget what sad feels like.

Songs »Sugar Water

Sugar Water by Cibo Matto A great song that feels so nineties – when my world was a bit more carefree, with a brilliant Gondry video, trippy lyrics, and who can forget their guest star on the Buffy episode “When She Was Bad” where she acts like a total skank?

Songs »Love Hurts

Love Hurts I listen to this song around ten times a day lately. Performed live in 1973 – it is as lovely and sad a song as you could hope to hear from two of my favorite performers.

Songs »Summer Breeze

Summer Breeze by Seals and Crofts (1972) My birthday themed picks this week are my favorite things that haven't made the list yet–and I can hardly believe this one has not been included so far. I'm ashamed. Simply beautiful both lyrically and musically:

See the curtains hangin' in the window, in the evenin' on a Friday night.
A little light a-shinin' through the window, lets me know everything is alright.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.

See the paper layin' in the sidewalk, a little music from the house next door.
So I walked on up to the doorstep, through the screen and across the floor.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.

Sweet days of summer, the jasmine's in bloom. July is dressed up and playing her tune.
And I come home from a hard day's work, and you're waiting there, not a care in the world.
See the smile a-waitin' in the kitchen, food cookin' and the plates for two.
See the arms that reach out to hold me, in the evening when the day is through.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.

Uptown Top Ranking by Althea and Donna Think of Jim and I on a topless beach in Jamaica, because that is where we will be when you read this. Possibly getting cornrows a la Federline… but very possibly not.
