Desserts »Cookie Road

cookie road dalmationWhile other establishments (the once exciting, now disappointing Ichiran and the unknown dark hole on Bedford at North 9th with the conspicuous stained glass window reading 'Girls All Night') are certainly taking eons longer than Cookie Road did to open up, its imminent opening still seemed to have the neighborhood abuzz and impatient.

Located on the corner of the ever expanding, almost-there shopping destination that is Franklin, the little shop has brightened the neighborhood in a weird but fun way with a mural depicting Charlie Chaplin and a couple of penguins.

Inside, the shop is more subdued with a counter full of both signature decorated sugar cookies and various tartlets and pastries. On our first visit we chose a sightless Dalmatian (though we would have opted for the Michael Jackson portrait ones that were available the next week for obvious reasons). As no particular fan of the simple sugar cookie, it's hard for me to judge the taste… it tasted like a sugar cookie with the standard hard icing on top.

But I can tell you for certain though that the key lime tart and the rocky road cookie we brought as dessert offerings to a friends' dinner were excellent. The tart gets high marks for the buttery graham cookie crust that tastes like something your non-health conscious grandmother would feed you with love.

And the owners, both Polish and keeping it local, are sweet as can be.

Desserts »Cherry Garcia

Cherry Garcia Cherry Garcia tastes like innocence and summer and no sunny season is complete without at least one cup.

I first tried it (and Ben and Jerry's in general) when I was attending pre college in 1995, my first major time spent away from home and the first year the company began making frozen yogurt versions of their most popular flavors (which are about 100 calories less than their ice cream per serving).

As I'm sure you are aware, the frozen delight is named after the late Grateful Dead front-man Jerry.

Desserts »Big Gay Icecream Truck

big gay ice cream truckFor “the queerest dairy treats in NYC” head over to the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, a roaming traditional soft serve truck with daily changing premium toppings like fresh blueberries and ginger crisps.

We went for the more traditional vanilla with butterscotch toppings, yum! and enjoyed the bonus of friendly service.

To find out where the truck will be parked next, stay tuned to his blog (soon he'll be perched outside previous Brix Pick The Phoenix).

Desserts »Cafe Sabarsky

Cafe Sabarsky

Why do I mention it now?

Because we just enjoyed a relaxing wine filled lunch here (it's a perfect
stop off after a museum day) and were again blown away by the scrumptious desserts. I can't recommend the Milchrahmstrudel: quark cheese strudel with vanilla sauce enough!

Here's what I said back on 4/24/06:

Located in the Neue Galerie which is now hosting a Klee show, this scrumptious Viennese cafe has some tantalizing dessert choices. Doug and I opted for a white chocolate mousse torte with citrus fruit. It was dense, decadent, and perfectly balanced, no flavor was too overbearing.

A perfect spot for a quick dessert and coffee during a museum day. Tip – if the line is long, the downstairs cafe has the same menu and not as many people know about it.

Desserts »Ralph’s Italian Ices

ralph's italian icesRalph's Italian Ices are a treat I always cherish anytime I'm in Oyster Bay, preferably after a meal of steamer clams served by teenage girls at the seafood place that sits next to the Ralph's drive-thru. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would ever be able to simply walk to a Ralph's this summer any day I pleased, but news that a Ralph's set up shop just past the BQE is going to make my summer a whole lot better.

There are just so many flavors I have yet to try (I tend to stick to vanilla chip) but I started with the toasted marshmallow which was excellent. The small is big enough to share, and I can't even imagine what kind of mad man would attempt the “small bucket” size.

For true connoisseurs of the Italian ice, you'll be happy to know that Ralph's rival, Uncle Louie G's is just down the street on the same block. Rivalry never tasted so good.

Desserts »Corner Frenzy

corner frenzyWe've been meaning to make the short walk to Corner Frenzy down the block because a. it's got the best store name of all, b. it's a laundry mat and an ice cream window in one, c. you order your ice cream off a hot pink tarp roped to the side of the building, and d. it's dirt cheap.

Peanut Butter soft serve and mango slushies (less chemically sweet than the gross dog version we all know) for a dollar and change a piece makes for almost perfect hot weather relief. I say almost because, if it's really hot and you (like Jim) have a massive beard, you are going to get messier than you've been in a long time. Ask for napkins friends.

Desserts »Cornflake Marshmallow Chocolate Cookie

cornflake marshmallow chocolate cookie momofuku milkEver wondered what a belly-filling, all cookie meal might be like? Head over to the ever inventive (the menu includes cereal milk and fireball soft serve) Momofuku Milk and order one of their incredible cookie creations. I opted for Cornflake, Marshmallow, and Chocolate and I think I can safely say it's one of the greatest cookies on earth.

Any food lover in the city is by now very familiar with David Chang and his mini empire of impressive food, and at Milk he's employed the brilliant Christina Tosi who hails from WD-50. I am excited to return and try more – currently they're featuring an Arnold Palmer cake: “A layer of iced tea-soaked cake, followed by tangy whipped lemon mascarpone cream, almond tea crunch, and iced tea jelly. In the middle: a layer of lemon cake. Repeat with cream, crunch, jelly, and cake.”

Desserts »Raspberry Buttercream Cake

dorrie raspberry buttercream cake I've mentioned before the huge perks of working with one of the best bakers I've ever met and I've got to say, Sarafina has outdone herself this time. From Dorie Greenspan's Baking: From My Home to Yours cookbook she created a cake that brought back happy memories of my own wedding cake – a raspberry butter cream.

Greenspan is a chef who earns universal love and devotion from avid bakers and has even spawned a club wryly called Tuesdays with Dorie, a group of women who make her recipes and blog about it here.
